Cantonese Opera Art Showcases Vigorous Vitality in Hong Kong

The core reading of Cantonese opera, along with Lingnan Painting School and Guangdong music, is known as the "Three Beauties of Lingnan". Nowadays, Cantonese opera elements have entered the daily lives of Hong Kong citizens, and Cantonese opera art has been taken to larger stages... A small costume is cherished by 17-year-old Hong Kong Cantonese opera actor Li Wenzhe. The nine tones and six tones, as well as the banghuang singing style, have already permeated the soil and water of Lingnan, nourishing the art of Cantonese opera, constantly innovating and revitalizing it. On the outdoor square outside the Sha Tin City Hall in the New Territories, the Shenghui Cantonese Opera Promotion Association is holding a unique children's and youth Cantonese opera performance. "This is Xie Juexin, 11 years old, playing Xu Xian. That is Huang Zhuojun, 12 years old, playing Bai Suzhen." In the center of the front row of the audience, Liu Qianshi, Honorary President of the Shenghui Cantonese Opera Promotion Association and Honorary Advisor of the Hong Kong Bahe Association, carefully observed the movements and postures of each child and introduced them with great precision. The children raised their hands and feet with precision, and Liu Qianshi couldn't help but cheer loudly, his eyes filled with relief. Liu Qianshi is the "big parent" in the eyes of children. During breaks in performances, children like to sit around him, either holding hands or leaning against their shoulders, listening to him sing clips from classic Cantonese opera. Liu Qianshi said that the diligent demeanor of the young actors always reminds him of his youth. Having been in the industry for decades, Liu Qianshi understands the significance of persistently inheriting Cantonese opera. The Shenghui Cantonese Opera Promotion Association (hereinafter referred to as "Shenghui") was established in 2003 and is a representative Cantonese opera art group in Hong Kong, dedicated to promoting Cantonese opera to young people. As a newcomer, Liu Qianshi never hesitates to praise the children's performances. As long as there is a performance by the children, Liu Qianshi's figure will always be seen. "The seed of Cantonese opera needs careful care, more encouragement and recognition, and it will naturally take root and sprout in the hearts of children." This seed emerged when Li Wenzhe was five years old. Over the next 10 years, Li Wenzhe plunged into the rehearsal room of "Shenghui", constantly honing his basic skills and gaining increasingly rich acting experience. "I have played characters such as Xu Xian, Jia Baoyu, Zhou Yu, Su Qin, etc. Cantonese opera has helped me better understand these characters, and the beauty of traditional Chinese culture conveyed in the stories has deeply attracted me." In the evening, Li Wenzhe finished a busy day of school work and took the subway from school to meet me at Lai Chi Kok. "Cantonese opera performance includes four major skills: 'singing, doing, reciting, and fighting' (i.e. singing skills, body shape, recitation, and martial arts), which have strict requirements for the basic skills of actors. Li Wenzhe seriously said that in addition to performing a series of difficult movements with various body shapes and singing in one go, actors also need to pay extra attention to their roles."
