The health literacy level of Chinese residents is steadily improving
2024-04-25
According to data released by the National Health Commission on the 24th, the health literacy level of Chinese residents reached 29.7% in 2023, an increase of 1.92 percentage points from 2022, and continues to show a steady improvement trend. Health literacy refers to an individual's ability to acquire and understand basic health information and services, and use these information and services to make correct decisions in order to maintain and promote their own health. The indicator of resident health literacy level is an important indicator for measuring the basic public service level of the country and the health level of the people. The monitoring results show that the health literacy levels of different regions and populations have improved, and the urban-rural gap has further narrowed. In 2023, the health literacy level of urban residents and rural residents in China was 33.25% and 26.23%, respectively, an increase of 1.31 and 2.45 percentage points compared to 2022. The health literacy levels of residents in the eastern, central, and western regions were 33.3%, 28.85%, and 24.44%, respectively, an increase of 1.42, 2.15, and 1.88 percentage points compared to 2022. It is understood that this monitoring covers 336 counties (districts) and 1008 townships (streets) in 31 provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government), targeting permanent residents aged 15 to 69. A total of 73340 valid survey questionnaires were obtained. It is reported that since 2012, the National Health Commission has continuously carried out dynamic monitoring of the health literacy level of urban and rural residents, showing that the health literacy level has steadily improved, from 8.8% in 2012 to 27.78% in 2022, achieving the goal of "reaching 25% by 2025" proposed in the "Healthy China Action (2019-2030)" ahead of schedule.
