As of the end of 2023, there were 55 nuclear power units in operation in mainland China, with a total installed capacity of 57 gigawatts. There were 36 approved and under construction nuclear power units, with a total installed capacity of 44 gigawatts; The annual nuclear power generation was 440000 GWh, accounting for nearly 5% of the country's cumulative power generation, equivalent to saving 130 million tons of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 350 million tons. It is reported that China has an independent and complete nuclear industry chain system. In recent years, it has adhered to the "three-step" strategy of "hot reactor fast reactor fusion reactor" nuclear energy and the nuclear fuel closed cycle technology route, established a safe and stable nuclear fuel supply guarantee system, and has the engineering construction and equipment manufacturing capabilities to simultaneously build multiple nuclear power units. It has accumulated rich experience in nuclear power design, construction, and operation, laying a solid foundation for the high-quality development of nuclear energy. China adheres to a rational, coordinated, and progressive nuclear safety concept, and has formulated and implemented policies and measures for the active, safe, and orderly development of nuclear power. Through practical actions, we have promoted carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, making a positive contribution to promoting global energy green and low-carbon transformation. According to the World Association of Nuclear Power Operators (WANO) comprehensive index, China's comprehensive performance in nuclear power operation safety has ranked among the top in the world for many consecutive years. In 2022 and 2023, 37 and 33 nuclear power units reached the full score of the WANO comprehensive index, respectively. At present, China's independent third-generation nuclear power "Hualong No.1" has achieved large-scale and quantitative development, and the construction of the "Guohe No.1" demonstration project with a single unit capacity of 1.5 million kilowatts is progressing smoothly. The world's first fourth generation high-temperature gas cooled reactor has been put into commercial operation, and the construction of small modular reactors and fast reactors is steadily advancing. Innovation and research in nuclear fusion technology continue to make breakthroughs. (Lai Xin She)
