Reaching "Poetry and Distant Places" in Reading
2024-04-23
On the occasion of the 29th World Book Day, the 2023 Shanghai Citizen Reading Survey was announced. The survey results show that in 2023, the comprehensive reading rate of Shanghai citizens (including paper reading, e-book reading, audio reading, and video reading) reached 97.49%, which is a stable increase compared to 2022 (96.83%) and 2021 (95.85%). In terms of reading quantity, the average annual reading volume of Shanghai citizens in 2023 was 12.37, maintaining a relatively high level. As an international cultural metropolis, Shanghai's submission of this national reading questionnaire demonstrates the positive trend of national reading in recent years. However, these data also remind people of the recently released Research Report on the Development of Online Audiovisual in China (2024). According to the report, the average daily usage time of mobile Internet users in 2023 will be 435 minutes, of which the average daily usage time of short video applications will be 151 minutes. Someone has calculated based on this: if 151 minutes of watching short videos every day are used for reading, at a reading speed of 10000 words per hour, one can read a 200000 word book every 8 days, and the annual reading volume will reach tens of books. In the current era of profound changes in cultural lifestyles, although such ideas are unrealistic, it cannot be denied that people's habits of deep reading still need to be strengthened. In recent years, with the popularization of mobile devices and the development of network technology, people have become increasingly accustomed to obtaining information from social media, online audiovisual applications, and other platforms, forming a diverse reading ecosystem. Compared with traditional paper-based reading, fragmented reading in the Internet era has its advantages: rich information can be quickly obtained at any time, anywhere, realizing a wide range of knowledge, so that each individual can observe the world from a more multidimensional perspective; By cutting and deconstructing content, higher knowledge barriers are no longer obstacles, and obscure theories and works can also become "accessible", achieving universal sharing. In modern society, where the pace of life is accelerating, the "short and fast" cultural consumption model also caters to people's demands for relaxation and emotional relief: when enjoying delicious food, choose a "dinner drama" as a good companion, thus obtaining "double the happiness"; On the commute, burying oneself in the phone has become the most common pastime; After finishing a day of work, let's put aside the complicated things and browse short videos or social media for one or two hours... New media technology has expanded the space for popular cultural life, but the excessive reliance on electronic media has put people into certain difficulties: pursuing a one-sided understanding of knowledge, investing too much time in fragmented information, shortening attention span, weakening rational thinking ability, and intensifying anxiety due to perceptual overload... Therefore, in the era of pan entertainment, we especially need the spiritual nourishment of deep reading. As an efficient reading method, deep reading obtains a complete knowledge network and logical framework, thereby achieving knowledge internalization. More importantly, this process requires coordinating multiple complex cognitive functions of the brain, which helps to train critical and logical thinking, improve concentration, insight, judgment, empathy, and other abilities - it allows us to remain independent in the face of diverse and complex information sources
