Why does he call himself a photographer from the Song Dynasty?

What does the ocean mean? Is it boundless, unrestrained, or eternal. Many years ago, a small Japanese child followed his parents on a trip to the Izu Peninsula, taking a tram from the hot sea to Odawara. As he passed through the iron bridge and eyeglass tunnel built between the cliffs, the ocean spread infinitely along a prominent horizontal line, making the child aware of his existence for the first time - "I am there.". He never imagined that this momentary scene would become the starting point of his memory, always lingering in his mind, and in the future, it would become the starting point of his creation, starting from there and lasting for decades. Today, the former child is now a 76 year old and has become a world-class artist. His short hair, which has transitioned from light gray to white, is combed back in colors similar to his photos filled with gray and white, as well as the sea in his memory. From March 23 to June 23, 2024, the first important institutional solo exhibition of internationally renowned artist Hiroshi Sugimoto in China, "Hiroshi Sugimoto: Endless Moments," was presented at the UCCA Ullens Center for Contemporary Art. The exhibition showcases his internationally renowned series of "sea views," "theaters," "discharge fields," and "portraits," as well as his latest completed and debut darkroom calligraphy art. There are a total of 127 photography, sculpture, and installation works in 11 series, showcasing his 50 year creative career. "Memory is an incredible thing: you won't remember what happened yesterday, but you can vividly recall the moments of childhood," Hiroshi Sugimoto told China Newsweek. Moments and eternity, life and death, truth and falsehood, present and future, truth and emptiness... This artist, known as the "last modernist," has brought Eastern and Western history, philosophy, and aesthetics into photography, and his creations have never left these philosophical themes throughout his life. "Color is emptiness." In front of his new work "Impressions of Brushes, Heart Sutra", which is 9 meters high and exhibited for the first time worldwide, Hiroshi Sugimoto recited one of the most famous Buddhist scriptures, "... Color is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from color; color is empty, emptiness is color...". Sugimoto Hiroshi's recitation echoed through the vast exhibition hall, causing people like him who have no religious beliefs to start thinking about the philosophical wisdom contained in Buddhist scriptures. Hiroshi Sugimoto was exposed to the Heart Sutra as early as the 1970s, but copying it was accidental. Due to the pandemic, he returned to his studio in New York three years after leaving, and found that many extremely expensive photo papers had expired. What should I do with these photo papers? Coincidentally, during this period, Sugimoto Hiroshi has been exploring new creative methods and has also begun to be exposed to calligraphy. He has always been interested in Chinese calligraphy, especially in the Southern Song Dynasty's Linji Sect monk Shi Shishi. Shi Shifu had a significant influence on Japan, and several Japanese monks during the Northern Song Dynasty were taught by him and brought his calligraphy works back to Japan. In the view of Hiroshi Sugimoto, Japan integrated calligraphy, painting, and poetry into a spiritual culture during the process of digesting and absorbing Chinese calligraphy and painting, and also retained this spiritual culture on its own. At home, Hiroshi Sugimoto extensively copied Shi Shigekatsu's calligraphy, hoping to learn his brushwork. After three years of copying like this, when he saw those photo papers that could no longer be printed, he
