Good sleep starts with good habits
2024-04-16
Sleep is the most fundamental life process of biological evolution. About one-third of a person's life is spent in sleep. According to relevant surveys, the average sleep time of Chinese residents is 6.75 hours, and young people, especially those born in the 2000s, have become the largest group of people who stay up late. How can I sleep well and deeply? Are the various intelligent sleep aid devices that have become popular recently really effective? The reporter conducted an interview on this. The quality of sleep needs to be improved. "The feeling of not being able to sleep in bed is like flipping pancakes. The long night is really agonizing." Yao Yu, a 25-year-old girl from Henan, has been having difficulty falling asleep for four years intermittently. There are still many people like her who have poor sleep. The 2024 White Paper on Sleep Health of Chinese Residents released by the China Sleep Research Association shows that the surveyed residents wake up an average of 1.4 times at night and have an average sleep duration of 6.75 hours. The Healthy China Action (2019-2030) advocates that adults should sleep an average of 7-8 hours per day. According to the Chinese Sleep Research Report 2024, the sleep index of Chinese residents in 2023 was 62.61 points, the lowest in nearly three years. At the same time, the respondents experienced subjective poorer sleep quality, more severe sleep procrastination, and more use of sleep medication. Why does sleep quality decline? Wang Junxiu, director of the Social Psychology Research Center of the Institute of Sociology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, believes that dependence on the Internet and mobile phones is one of the main reasons. Relevant data show that digitalization has affected residents' sleep to some extent: from the perspective of occupation, the proportion of occupational groups with different degrees of involvement in the Internet who sleep for 8 hours or more per night is less than 50%; In terms of age, 56% of college students use their phones for more than 8 hours a day, and 52% fall asleep after midnight. "With the popularity of electronic devices such as computers and mobile phones, people are more likely to be exposed to stimulating light sources such as blue light before going to bed, and their biological clocks will be disturbed. At the same time, excessive addiction to electronic devices will form mental dependence, which will also lead to difficulty in falling asleep or sleep rhythm problems." Lu Lin, an academician of the CAS Member and president of the Sixth People's Hospital of Peking University, told reporters. In addition to bad habits such as internet dependence, emotions and stress are also obstacles to sleep. "When I first experienced insomnia, it was during the high pressure of taking the postgraduate entrance exam. It gradually worsened to the point where I couldn't even stand the air conditioning running and my roommate flipping over at night." Yao Yu recalled that it wasn't until she "landed" in the postgraduate entrance exam and the pressure decreased that the difficulty of falling asleep was alleviated. "Clinically, more than half of patients may have sleep disorders caused by psychological factors," said Tang Kangmin, a physician at the Sleep Medicine Center of Longhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine. In addition to genetic and other congenital factors, there are also acquired factors such as high stress and psychological anxiety that can cause insomnia. What should I do if I can't sleep well? More and more people are seeking professional help. Ms. Wang from Jiangsu is often dreamy and prone to waking up after entering menopause. She plans to go to the hospital for treatment in the near future, but when it comes to registering, she feels a bit confused. "Some say it's for neurology, some say it's for endocrinology, and some say it's for respiratory care. Only a few hospitals have separate sleep departments."
