Bai Juyi's Life as an Official Traveler

2024-04-12

Bai Juyi was born in 772 AD. At this time, although the Tang Dynasty quelled the An Lushan Rebellion, local feudal lords were divided, eunuchs were in power in the court, and the living burden of ordinary people was increasing. As one of the greatest poets of the Tang Dynasty, Bai Juyi did not encounter the prosperous era of the Tang Dynasty, which was truly unfortunate for him personally. But the emergence of Bai Juyi was precisely a great blessing in the mid Tang Dynasty, which prevented the poetry world after Li Bai and Du Fu from lacking successors, and also added a touch of brilliance to the cultural and artistic aspects of Chinese history in the 9th century. Bai Juyi came from a small and medium-sized bureaucratic family known as Shidun Confucianism. In the Tang Dynasty society that valued social status, he could be said to have come from a solitary and humble background. When Bai Juyi was young, his whole family followed his father's job transfer and migration. After his father's death, the family's economy quickly fell into a predicament. This also forced Bai Juyi to inherit his family business, embark on a career path from passing the imperial examination to becoming an official, and transfer to the four directions of life. In ancient times, for literati, official travel was their main way of traveling. It can be said that Bai Juyi spent almost all of his life in a bureaucratic career. On the one hand, being an official ensured that he lived a relatively affluent life, reducing the number of scattered poems and writings, and also helped him become the poet with the most surviving works in the Tang Dynasty; On the other hand, the ups and downs of the eunuch sea also caused Bai Juyi to suffer a lot of separation throughout his life. Baijia County was originally located in Taiyuan, but Bai Wen, the great ancestor of Bai Juyi, moved to Xiagui in Guanzhong, where the ancestral tomb was located. Bai Juyi himself was born in Dongguo Mansion, Xinzheng, Zhengzhou. It is said that before the age of one, Bai Juyi was still in the arms of his wet nurse and had already memorized the characters "zhi" and "wu" under the screen of a book ("Yu Yuan Jiu Shu"). Under the influence of family education, Bai Juyi began to learn poetry at the age of five or six and became proficient in sound and rhyme at the age of nine, laying the foundation for his later life. Fuli: With spring breeze and wild grass, Bai Juyi studied hard during the bitter season. At the age of 11, his father Bai Jigeng changed his position to Beijia in Xuzhou. The Bai family left Zhengzhou and moved to Fuli south of Xuzhou. Xuzhou has been a battlefield since ancient times, and Fuli was an important canal hub at that time. This is of great significance for expanding the perspective of young Bai Juyi. The local areas of Beihu Suishui, Wulishan Village, Caotang Stone Bridge, and Donglin Old Courtyard were all written in his poetry and prose. After serving as an official, Bai Juyi returned to this hometown multiple times, and it can be said that Fuli is his "second hometown". According to the "Tang and Song Literature Chronological Map", the image of Bai Juyi's trace map is in Fuli. Bai Juyi's most unforgettable experience is still his diligent and diligent study, as well as his youth's friendship and love. He and five older young talents from the local area lived a life of "studying hard during the day, reading at night, and poetry during breaks" together. Bai Juyi's hard work even reached the point of sores on his mouth and tongue, thick calluses on his elbows, and his eyes "flickered like flying flies, with countless movements in his eyes.". In today's view, it should be caused by excessive use of the eyes leading to mosquito infestation. This also laid the foundation for the eye diseases that Bai Juyi repeatedly mentioned in his later years. Years later, Bai Juyi still maintained sincere friendship with his childhood classmates, drinking together and reminiscing about the beautiful years of "working hand in hand in the morning and evening, living in poverty in the alleys. Writing a couplet poem on the night of autumn lanterns, and pouring warm wine into the spring snow.". Bai Juyi and the girl next door
