On April 11, the National Medical Insurance Administration released the "2023 Statistical Express on the Development of Medical Security", which introduced the development of medical insurance in 2023 from multiple aspects such as insured persons, income and expenditure of medical insurance funds, medical insurance assistance for rural revitalization, and direct settlement for medical treatment in different regions. As of the end of 2023, the number of participants in basic medical insurance was about 1.334 billion, with a stable coverage of over 95% and a continuous improvement in the quality of participation. In 2023, the total income and expenditure of the basic medical insurance fund (including maternity insurance) were 3.33 trillion yuan and 2.81 trillion yuan, respectively. In 2023, 25 provinces that originally undertook the task of poverty alleviation through medical insurance provided medical assistance to 73.082 million people to participate in basic medical insurance, with an expenditure of 15.38 billion yuan. The participation rate of low-income rural population and poverty alleviation population remained stable at over 99%. The triple system of basic medical insurance, major illness insurance, and medical assistance has cumulatively benefited 186 million low-income rural residents in seeking medical treatment, reducing the burden of medical expenses by 188.35 billion yuan. The new edition of the National Medical Insurance Drug Catalogue added 126 new drugs, including 3088 western medicines and traditional Chinese patent medicines and simple preparations, including 1698 western medicines, 1390 traditional Chinese patent medicines and simple preparations, and 892 Chinese herbal pieces.
