The strongest magnetic resonance imaging instrument performs the first human brain scan
2024-04-07
According to the Physicist Organization Network on April 2nd, the world's strongest magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device, Iseult, has conducted its first human brain scan. The scanning image accuracy has reached a new level, 10 times higher than the commonly used MRI equipment in hospitals, revealing the tiny blood vessels that supply oxygen to the cerebral cortex and previously almost invisible details of the cerebellum, helping scientists explore more secrets about the human brain and related diseases. Iseult is located in the south of Paris. Scientists from the French Atomic Energy Commission first used the machine to scan pumpkins in 2021, and health authorities recently gave it a green light to scan the human body. In the past few months, about 20 healthy volunteers have become the first to receive Iseult scans. The power of a regular MRI typically does not exceed 3 Tesla, while the magnetic field generated by Iseult reaches 11.7 Tesla, allowing the machine to scan images with unprecedented accuracy. Iseult can make images of lithium targeting brain regions clearer, helping to determine the patient's response to drugs. Iseult is a research result of a 20-year collaboration between French and German engineers. The United States and South Korea are also developing equally powerful MRI machines, but have not yet started scanning the human body. Nicholas Brandt, Science Director of the Iseurt project, stated that one of the main goals of Iseurt and other devices is to improve scientists' understanding of the anatomical structure of the brain and reveal which regions of the brain are activated during specific tasks. Researchers also hope that Iseult can help reveal the elusive mechanisms behind neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, as well as psychological disorders such as depression and schizophrenia.
