The US military promotes the militarization of AI technology
2024-04-03
Recently, the US Department of Defense and various branches of the US military have successively announced the progress of their projects in the field of artificial intelligence technology applications. Currently, the US Department of Defense is collaborating with civilian artificial intelligence companies to accelerate the military application of artificial intelligence technology. American media believe that there are issues with the lack of policies and regulations, and uncontrollable technology in the use of artificial intelligence technology by the US military, and the urgency to promote the militarization of this technology may bring hidden dangers. Multiple research and development projects have been announced. Recently, the US Department of Defense disclosed some of the key projects for the application of artificial intelligence technology, the "Meiwen" plan. It is reported that the US military can use this project to automatically identify the positions of rocket launchers and surface vessels, and lock the target of attack. Skyler Moore, Chief Technology Officer of the United States Central Command, stated that this is only part of the "Mavericks" program, which aims to build a system that identifies battlefield personnel and equipment through algorithms. He stated that the system has been promoted for use in the US Army's 18th Airborne Corps and will be improved based on training data and user feedback. The US Department of Defense has also released a command and control system project codenamed Palantir. This system is an artificial intelligence platform led by the Command and Control Research Office of the US Department of Defense, integrating intelligence gathering, action decision-making, command and control, and communication functions. This system can process big data on intelligence information obtained through battlefield reconnaissance, satellite monitoring, and open source channels, identify potential threats, and provide decision-making solutions, thereby helping the US military quickly implement strike operations. It is reported that the US Department of Defense will select pilot units from various branches of the military and gradually promote the practical application of the platform. In response to the actions of the US Department of Defense, various branches of the US military have recently launched multiple projects in the field of artificial intelligence technology applications. The US Air Force has launched the "Intelligent Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Universal Integration" framework, achieving technological breakthroughs such as "path autonomous selection" and "threat source screening". It plans to produce 1000 unmanned aerial vehicles with human-machine collaborative combat capabilities under this framework and deploy the first "Intelligent Unmanned Aerial Vehicle" squadron in 2024. The US Army has launched the Infantry Squad Support System and the Advanced Armed Robotics System. The Infantry Squad Support System platform can carry 180 kilograms of equipment and choose the optimal path to reach the deployment site 30 kilometers away. The advanced armed robot system adopts a modular design and can perform tasks such as bomb disposal, patrol, and reconnaissance. The US Army has also released artificial intelligence systems such as exoskeleton armor and digital triage assistants for individual combat. It is said that installing exoskeleton armor on the knees and ankles of soldiers can double their leg strength and endurance, and improve their individual weight-bearing ability. The US Navy launches the DDG (X) program. In this project, the US Navy can use artificial intelligence systems to communicate with surrounding combat platforms, obtain real-time information on the opponent's weapon platform position, and provide strike guidance. In addition, the US Navy has also tested artificial intelligence technology modules such as the Autonomous Core Control System and the Joint Optimal Conflict Avoidance Algorithm, which can achieve autonomous navigation, navigation, and communication for small-sized unmanned vessels. The US Marine Corps has launched the "Power" program. This project can capture the data required for combat through big data, achieve data management authorization and automated processing
