2024-04-02
Stephen Owens, President of the National Committee on US China Relations, which has long been committed to promoting friendship between the United States and China, recently stated in an interview with Xinhua News Agency in Shanghai that developing constructive relations between the United States and China not only benefits the people of both countries, but also makes the world a better place. The two sides should focus on areas where cooperation can be achieved and continue to strengthen civil exchanges. From 1976 to 1979, Orens worked at the Office of Legal Counsel of the United States Department of State. During this period, he participated as a member of the US legal team in promoting the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and China. In 2005, Orens began serving as the President of the National Committee on US China Relations. He is fluent in Mandarin and a member of the American Diplomatic Association. Owens told reporters that he fell in love with China due to his involvement in promoting the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and China. With the passage of time and multiple visits to China, he has been committed to strengthening the relationship between the United States and China and bringing the two peoples closer together. In his view, a constructive and fruitful US China relationship brings benefits to the people of both countries. Owens said that the US China relationship faces many challenges and opportunities, and both sides should focus more on areas where they can cooperate and strengthen bilateral relations. Looking back at history, Orens stated that the older generation of leaders from both countries achieved diplomatic and political breakthroughs through the form of "ping pong diplomacy", which is also of great significance in changing the views of Chinese people towards the United States and Americans towards China. "When the relationship between the US and China is close, the government and policies will also keep up. What we need to do now is to strengthen the interaction between the US and China," said Owens. The National Committee on US China Relations is one of the organizers.
