The National Spirit in Movies
2024-03-27
As one of the most effective and influential forms of literature and art, Chinese cinema has shone with the national spirit and formed a unique artistic tradition over the course of over a hundred years of development. Throughout history, filmmakers have focused on national righteousness, cultivated patriotism, and praised hard work and bravery, shaping classic images that have deeply penetrated people's hearts and telling enduring stories of China. With the development of the times, the technological means of artistic creation and the aesthetic taste of movie audiences have undergone tremendous changes. However, regardless of the changes, the national spirit centered on patriotism in the Chinese bloodline is inherited, and it persists in film works through more diverse and rich forms of expression, showcasing the unique spiritual charm of Chinese culture. The consistent patriotism and national spirit of the Chinese nation are not only derived from the profound cultural accumulation achieved by the long-standing Chinese civilization, but also reflect the national consciousness, beliefs, and values condensed by the Chinese people in the practical experience of history. At every stage of historical development, the Chinese people have always faced challenges with the national spirit of perseverance and self-improvement, bravely undertaking the mission of the times. Correspondingly, at different stages of the development of Chinese cinema, filmmakers have also created excellent films with different styles and diverse genres, bearing distinct historical imprints and promoting national spirit. In the 1930s and 1940s, it was a time of crisis for the Chinese nation. Under the influence of the CPC, the left-wing film movement emerged at the historic moment, producing a number of films full of progressive spirit and family and country feelings, such as "Yu Guang Qu", "Road Angel", which achieved a very important creation peak in the history of Chinese film, and to some extent established the realism tradition of Chinese film since then. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Shanghai Film Studio, Bayi Film Studio, and others were successively established. Popular films such as "Song of Youth", "Eternal Radio Waves", and "Tunnel War" have been released to this day. These works focus on portraying heroic figures with a strong sense of patriotism, depicting the growth and transformation of the Chinese people during the Anti Japanese War, as well as their indomitable and selfless spirit. In "Song of Youth", Lin Daojing grew from an intellectual to a strong and brave proletarian warrior, and ultimately embarked on the path of revolution. In "The Eternal Radio," Li Xia and He Lanfen play the role of husband and wife in intelligence work for the sake of revolutionary cause and faith, sacrificing their own selves. When Li Xia sacrificed himself, the last sentence sent by telegram, "Comrades, goodbye forever, I miss you all", is still deeply moving today. Li He and his two have also become the blueprint for shaping the image of the underground party in many subsequent film and television works. During this period, heroism, patriotism, and revolutionary spirit were the main themes that reflected the national spirit in Chinese cinema. Since the beginning of the new century, Chinese cinema has undergone a series of changes such as industrialization reform, sparking a new mainstream film creation trend that combines ideological and artistic value with commercial value. This type of film mainly focuses on military and war themes, often reproducing important historical nodes in modern Chinese history with strong genres and strong narratives. With the rapid development of creative concepts and production techniques, the narrative methods of movies have become more diverse, and the representation of historical scenes has become more realistic and moving.
