New technology helps to realize "early detection and early treatment" of tuberculosis

March 24 is the 29th World Day to Fight tuberculosis. The propaganda theme of our country is "Work Together to End the Tuberculosis Epidemic". At the salon on the theme of "technology upgrading to accelerate the process of ending the epidemic of tuberculosis in China" held by the Social Media Research Center of Peking University on the 21st, Zhao Yanlin, director of the tuberculosis Prevention and Control Center of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that to achieve the goal of ending the epidemic of tuberculosis in China, we must improve the quality and accessibility of services, block the spread of tuberculosis among people, and take "proactive detection+preventive treatment", including the introduction of new tools, new diagnostic technologies, new vaccines, new drugs, etc. Tuberculosis is one of the oldest and deadliest infectious diseases in the world, and it is still a persistent disease puzzling the world today. The Global tuberculosis Report 2023 released by the World Health Organization shows that in 2022, China will estimate 748000 new cases of tuberculosis, accounting for 7.1% of the global incidence, and the estimated incidence rate of tuberculosis will be 52/100000. Tuberculosis is insidious. China has made outstanding achievements in tuberculosis prevention and control. Every year, 70% -80% of new cases are diagnosed, and the cure rate of drug sensitive tuberculosis patients has remained above 90% for many years. Zhao Yanlin said that the main difficulty faced by tuberculosis prevention and control is "early detection". Tuberculosis has a certain degree of concealment, about 20% of suspected cases have no symptoms. "Symptomatic treatment" is the main way to find tuberculosis patients in China. That is to say, patients will only go to medical institutions for examination when they have symptoms, but patients infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis often have contagiousness before the symptoms appear. Some patients do not actively seek medical attention because their symptoms are not obvious. Data shows that at least 40% of TB cases in the world have not been diagnosed. The transmission of tuberculosis caused by patients who did not see a doctor accounted for 70% of the community transmission of tuberculosis. Zhao Yanlin said that the tuberculosis prevention and control work should "move forward". It is necessary to find high-risk groups, namely active tuberculosis patients and subclinical tuberculosis patients (there are lesions in the body but no clinical manifestations) as soon as possible, and intervene and block their transmission in the community, thereby reducing the incidence rate and mortality of tuberculosis. New technology brings new opportunities for prevention and treatment. Technological progress has made tuberculosis prevention and treatment obtain unprecedented new opportunities. Zhu Limei, Director of the Chronic Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Institute of the Jiangsu Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said that in 2021, Jiangsu established the Provincial Health Cloud Image Platform, which uploads all image data from all public hospitals and some private hospitals in the province, thereby achieving unified storage, quality control, and access of image data. At the end of 2023, Jiangsu will install an artificial intelligence film reading system on this platform, which is expected to achieve early detection of lung diseases, including tuberculosis, through the assistance of artificial intelligence in film reading throughout the province in the future. The application of new technologies enables drug-resistant tuberculosis patients to be detected earlier. Zhu Limei said that in 2019, all municipal and county-level designated hospitals in Jiangsu were equipped with drug resistance molecular biology testing equipment. This year, 20 communities in Jiangsu were equipped with the testing equipment, and all suspected tuberculosis patients in TB clinics can get this fast and accurate test for free. According to data from the Jiangsu Provincial Health Commission, in 2023, Jiangsu Province
