China maintains the world's largest number of 26 nuclear power units under construction
2024-03-20
"As one of the few countries in the world with an independent and complete nuclear industry chain, China's mainland currently has 55 operating nuclear power units, ranking third in the world; 26 under construction nuclear power units, ranking first in the world. In 2022 and 2023, 10 nuclear power units were approved annually for two consecutive years, and nuclear power construction has entered a high-quality development track," said Wang Shoujun, Chairman of the China Nuclear Society. Wang Shoujun made the above statement at the opening ceremony of the 2024 China International Nuclear Industry Exhibition held on March 19. The 2024 China International Nuclear Industry Exhibition will be held from March 19th to 22nd at the Beijing Exhibition Hall. The theme of this exhibition is "Supporting the achievement of the 'dual carbon' goal and promoting high-quality development of nuclear energy". More than 110 enterprises and research institutions from more than 10 countries and regions participated, with an exhibition area of over 16000 square meters. At the exhibition, China's independent intellectual property rights include third-generation nuclear power technology "Hualong 1", the new generation artificial sun "China Circulation 3", and the multi-purpose modular small reactor technology demonstration project "Linglong 1"... The achievements of China's nuclear technology industry in recent years have attracted attention. The exhibition will also hold activities such as the "Nuclear Technology Helps a Better Life" science popularization exhibition, the national nuclear science popularization education base licensing ceremony, and the science popularization book press conference. "The China International Nuclear Industry Exhibition is a window and platform for China's nuclear industry product technology and major equipment to go global." Wang Shoujun said that in recent years, China's nuclear technology innovation system has comprehensively improved, and the large-scale development of advanced nuclear energy technology has effectively promoted the achievement of China's "dual carbon" goals. The application of nuclear technology, the autonomy of nuclear equipment, and the digitalization and intelligence of the nuclear industry have also driven the development of the national economy. Yu Jianfeng, Chairman of China National Nuclear Corporation, said, "The total installed capacity of units in operation, under construction, and approved for construction in China has exceeded 100 million kilowatts. The national nuclear power industry has generated approximately 4 trillion kilowatt hours of electricity, of which 430 billion kilowatt hours were generated in 2023, equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 320 million tons. This has played a constructive role in helping to achieve carbon neutrality goals and address global climate change." Yin Hao, Secretary of the Secretariat of the China Association for Science and Technology, stated that the safe and orderly development of nuclear energy, strengthening the construction of nuclear safety assurance systems, continuously improving nuclear safety technology, optimizing energy structure, and ensuring energy source safety.
