The new wearable system can recognize human emotions in real-time

The team from the National Institute of Science and Technology in Ulsan, South Korea has developed a groundbreaking technology that can recognize human emotions in real-time, with the potential to completely change various industries and provide the next generation of wearable systems based on emotional services. The relevant paper was published in the latest issue of the journal Scientific Progress. For a long time, understanding and accurately extracting emotional information has been a challenge due to the abstraction and ambiguity of emotions and feelings. To address this issue, the research team has developed a multimodal human emotion recognition system. This system combines linguistic and nonverbal expression data to effectively utilize comprehensive emotional information. The core of this system is the Personalized Skin Integrated Facial Interface (PSiFI) system, which features innovative bidirectional friction strain and vibration sensors that can simultaneously sense and collect both verbal and nonverbal expression data, and then achieve real-time emotion recognition through wireless data transmission. This technology is based on the phenomenon of "frictional charging", where objects separate into positive and negative charges during friction, and the system does not require external power sources or complex measuring equipment to identify data. The research team successfully integrated the detection of facial muscle deformation and vocal cord vibration, and collected multimodal data on facial muscle deformation and sound through experiments. Under minimal training, the system exhibits high accuracy. It also ensures wearability and convenience. The system can also be applied to VR environments, including digital concierges, smart homes, private cinemas, and smart offices. Researchers say that this achievement demonstrates the potential for using emotions in next-generation wearable systems, which are one of the most complex forms of human information expression. With this system, real-time emotion recognition can be achieved with just a few learning steps, without the need for complex measurement equipment in the past. This brings possibilities for future portable emotion recognition devices and next-generation emotion based digital platform services. As mentioned in the article, emotions are a complex form of human information. As the song goes, "Laugh and sing; frown and you feel heartbroken." Emotions can be expressed through facial expressions and sounds, so this system that can detect facial muscle deformation and vocal cord vibration shines, transforming into a "confidant" and becoming a thoughtful "person" who can perceive changes in our mood. People's pleasure and boredom can be recognized, and the system can take different measures based on changes in people's mood, provide options that meet people's preferences, and provide ironing services. However, sometimes humans also disguise their emotions. I wonder if this system can recognize "skin laughing but flesh not laughing"? (Lai Xin She)
