New Year's Walk to the Grassroots | A New Year's Struggle with a Beam of "Light" - Entering a Scientific Research Team Striving for Time in the Development of Space Lasers

2024-02-17

Entering the Aerospace Laser Technology and System Department of the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, researchers are busy around a "metal box" about half a meter long and half wide. They wear clean clothes and goggles, and attach parts to the "metal box", which is as nervous and meticulous as a surgeon. This Spring Festival, more than 20 young scientific and technological workers from the team chased after "light" together without taking a day off. Wang Mingjian, a senior engineer of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Shanghai Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, pointed to the "metal box" and said, "This is a space laser used to guarantee a major aerospace mission. We must complete the development of seven products by the end of July this year, and complete the delivery task according to the node plan." In fact, according to the conventional development cycle, this task will take two to three years. But when the task is assigned, it means the countdown to tackling the problem is racing against time. Therefore, the team does not consider holidays and weekends when formulating the development plan, in order to be able to complete the final product delivery on time. Researchers from the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, are conducting integrated testing. As an indispensable equipment in the aerospace field, space lasers, like the eyes, ears, and other senses of spacecraft, play an important role in ranging, imaging, analyzing atmospheric components, and many other aspects. For the space laser currently under development, the team has completed specific technical research and development, and now the focus is on achieving true aerospace engineering applications. This step is extremely difficult because during technology development, only performance needs to be considered, without considering its volume, weight, and adaptability to spatial environments. During engineering development, it is necessary to integrate hundreds of components into this "metal box" and ensure that they can operate reliably for a long time in harsh space environments. "Every day, we are afraid that there may be problems at the research and development site. Once there are problems, it means that the plan may be delayed, which is something that everyone does not want to see. In the future, we need to optimize the process according to the actual situation and seize time every minute." Wang Mingjian said. The reporter learned from the interview that in the past year, the team's task management was on a daily basis, and these young technology workers almost dedicated themselves to this major technology project. Some of them are new fathers, but they only take three or four days off when their baby is born and immediately return to work; Some people originally planned to go home and get engaged during the Spring Festival, but now their plans have been postponed; More people are on 24-hour shifts, wearing stars and moon... team history photos. Wang Mingjian introduced that the growth of the team goes hand in hand with the development of space lasers in China. As their technological level becomes more advanced, their application directions are also becoming more and more extensive. Since the successful development of China's first space laser in 2007, the space laser developed by the team has been applied in multiple fields such as lunar exploration engineering, manned spaceflight, and civil aerospace. Good start and good end, good work and good completion. When asked about the team's wishes for the new year, Wang Mingjian said that everyone's biggest wish is to successfully complete the task. This may be the technology industry that is still struggling during the Chinese New Year
