2024-02-05
According to TASS and Reuters on February 4th, at 11:30:08 Moscow time (16:30:08 Beijing time), 59 year old Russian astronaut Kononenko broke the record held by astronaut Gennady Padarka and became the longest astronaut to stay in space. Before retiring in 2017, Padarka had flown a total of 878 days, 11 hours, 29 minutes, and 48 seconds in five space flights. Kononenko is the captain of the Russian Federal Space Agency's astronaut team. According to the data, Kononenko began training as a member of the International Space Station (ISS) program at the age of 34. According to the Russian news agency Interfax, on April 8, 2008, as part of the 17th main exploration mission of the International Space Station, Kononenko conducted its first space flight and returned to Earth on October 24, 2008. On September 15, 2023, he arrived at the International Space Station aboard the Russian Federation MS-24 spacecraft, marking his fifth space flight mission. Kononenko will complete this mission on September 23rd, and his stay in space will reach 1110 days. The International Space Station is one of the few international projects that the United States and Russia are still closely cooperating on. In December 2023, the Russian Federal Space Agency announced that a cross flight program with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States to the International Space Station had been extended until 2025.
