Spring silkworms die before the silk is exhausted - written on the occasion of Mr. Li Lingpu's 90th birthday

2024-01-29

It has been over ten years since Mr. Li Lingpu passed away, and I have always felt unreal. Many shots of Mr. Li's illness often flash in front of me. What is particularly unforgettable is that the "Explanation of Ancient Writing" compiled by the teacher at the end of his life has finally been published. Lying on the hospital bed, he effortlessly stroked the new book with a bony hand, slowly and intermittently saying to me, "I can't sign it for you anymore. The teacher really doesn't seem to be able to do it.". Every time I think of this scene, my heart wrenches like a knife. This year marks the 90th anniversary of Mr. Lingpu's birth, and I often dream of him. Biography of Scholar Li Lingpu (1934.1-2012.11), pen name Li Pu. Shandong Wendeng people. Linguist. Before his death, he was a professor in the Chinese Department of East China Normal University and honorary director of the Center for Chinese Language Research and Application. In 1956, he was admitted to the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at East China Normal University. He graduated in 1960 and stayed on as a teacher. He has authored works such as Selected Annotations on Oracle Bone Inscriptions and Study of Oracle Bone Inscriptions, as well as edited works such as Gu Lin on Ancient Chinese Characters. The author provided pictures, showing great kindness, love, fame, and wealth. I followed Mr. Lingpu to study, but my initial motivation was not noble. In the 1990s, a new policy orientation emerged in some universities, where teachers without doctoral degrees could not serve as doctoral supervisors. Young and middle-aged university teachers are seeking doctoral opportunities for this, even those who have already been promoted to professor. Under the influence of this wave, I, who had already passed the evaluation of the school's professor title, also began to contact and pursue a doctoral degree, and as a result, I was able to meet Mr. After establishing a teacher-student relationship with my husband, I gradually felt his utmost kindness and love, and saw how indifferent he was to fame and fortune. The initial contact with Mr. was through a letter. About a week after my letter was sent, I received a reply from my husband. He invited me to Shanghai to meet him, and that meeting determined the direction of my life. Mr. treated me to a meal at the Lixing Restaurant in a village of East China Normal University and chatted for two to three hours while eating. My husband highly praised my research achievements and took care of me to focus on improving my foreign language proficiency in order to take the exam. When I went from Yangzhou to Shanghai to take the exam, my husband took me to the hotel he had already booked and specifically instructed the front desk to cover all the expenses. After three exams, after each one, I could see my teacher waiting for me in the chilly spring. Seeing the trembling teacher, I couldn't help but shed tears. He didn't ask me how I did on the exam, but advised me to take a break and prepare for the next one. In the end, my foreign language score was still a few points short of the admission score line of that year. Mr. Lingpu took my research achievements and searched for all relevant leaders, and finally managed to secure an exceptional admission spot. A few years later, in the presence of a graduate school leader, the gentleman proudly said that if it weren't for insisting on exceptional admission, East China Normal University wouldn't have had this first "National Hundred Excellent Doctoral Dissertations" in Chinese Language and Writing. During the first semester of my doctoral studies at school, when we were on winter vacation, my husband and I had a long conversation. He reviewed the history of the discipline of Chinese Language and Writing at East China Normal University, held deep respect for many senior scholars, conducted a detailed analysis of the current situation of the discipline, and looked forward to the future of the discipline. Then, he asked me, are you willing to transfer over? I was completely unprepared and only asked lightly, "Sir, is this possible?"
