Will artificial intelligence become the "next move" for upgrading traditional computers?
2024-01-22
Recently, International Data Corporation (IDC) announced that the global shipment of traditional computers in the fourth quarter of 2023 was close to 67.1 million units, a decrease of 2.7% compared to the same period in 2022. Although slightly higher than expected, global computer market shipments have been declining year-on-year for eight consecutive quarters. Why does the global traditional computer market continue to be sluggish? Has the traditional computer industry entered a bottleneck period? What will be the future development direction of computers? The traditional computer market has been continuously sluggish since the birth of the world's first general-purpose computer ENIAC in 1946, and computers have a history of 78 years of development. With the rapid popularization of the Internet, computers have been highly integrated with people's work and life, bringing tremendous changes to the development of almost all fields. However, due to the dual pressure from both the demand and supply sides, the current traditional computer market has fallen into a sustained downturn. Firstly, the demand side lacks sufficient expansion tension. The reasons for the insufficient demand for traditional computers are multifaceted, which can be summarized as two aspects: consumption and products. From the perspective of consumption, mobile office and smart office are increasingly becoming the main office models, which has led consumers to adopt a more conservative consumption strategy when purchasing traditional computer products. From a product perspective, with the continuous advancement of technology, the durability and performance of computers continue to improve, the convenience of computer equipment maintenance continues to improve, the actual service life of computers is extended, and users generally have a weak willingness to replace them. Secondly, the innovation power on the supply side is not strong. The computer manufacturing industry has developed to this day, with a relatively stable industrial chain and highly mature products. This is certainly beneficial for ensuring computer quality, but it has also led to a relatively stagnant state of innovation in the entire industry, with software and hardware upgrades gradually slowing down and computers struggling to make new breakthroughs in functionality. Although domestic and foreign computer manufacturers are trying to develop new products and technologies, explore new models and fields, this can only achieve some "squeezing toothpaste style" innovation. Overall, the degree of homogenization of computer products is constantly increasing, and there is a serious lack of disruptive discoveries and breakthrough progress. At the same time, the competitiveness of computer substitutes continues to improve. With the innovative development and rapid iteration of smartphones and tablets, in addition to some highly specialized functions, more and more functions of computers are gradually being replaced by phones or tablets, and the number of scenarios where computers must be used is constantly decreasing. The key to the breakthrough of AI computers is the widespread adoption of smartphones, the slowdown in innovation level, and the improvement of product durability, among other factors. The traditional computer industry has entered a strategic crossroads. It should be noted that despite the sluggish growth of the traditional computer market, computers will still play an important role in human work and life for a long time to come, and a large number of users still have a need to use them. Based on this, the author believes that the sales of traditional computers may continue to decline, but they will not be eliminated. Artificial intelligence computers are expected to become a breakthrough direction for leading computer companies and digital technology manufacturers. Due to the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence technology, integration with artificial intelligence has increasingly become a development trend in many traditional industries, including the traditional computer industry. Artificial intelligence computers are a fusion of artificial intelligence technology and traditional computers
