In November 2023, the Ministry of Education issued a notice on its official website regarding the implementation of the 2024 Special Type Enrollment Work in General Higher Education Institutions (hereinafter referred to as the "Notice"), clarifying the context of the art examination reform. Starting from 2024, art majors in universities will implement a recruitment and admission model based on the unified college entrance examination, with provincial unified examination as the main body, and based on the cultural and professional examination results of the college entrance examination, and with reference to the comprehensive quality evaluation of students. The scope of the provincial unified examination for art majors will be further expanded. The provincial (district, city) unified examination has basically achieved full coverage for subjects such as music, dance, performance, broadcasting and hosting, art and design, calligraphy, etc., and inter provincial joint examination has been implemented for opera. Only a few art majors in universities with distinctive characteristics, high quality of talent cultivation, and high requirements for artistic talent, professional skills, or basic skills of candidates can apply according to the procedure, and the school examination can be organized on the basis of the provincial unified examination. According to the current list of qualifications for art majors in ordinary higher education institutions released by various provinces, there may be around 40 schools that are eligible to organize school exams in 2024. The so-called art examination refers to the examination of art majors in ordinary higher education institutions, which is a way to select and cultivate artistic talents. For a long time, the art examination has received high social attention. How to reform the art examination also affects the nerves of many candidates, parents, schools, and even art examination training institutions. Now, the "new art exam" has arrived, and the 2024 art exam students are catching up with the final implementation of the reform. The beginning of this art examination reform began in 2019. On December 11, 2019, the Ministry of Education issued an article titled "Strictly Standardizing and Doing a Good Job in the 2020 Special Type Enrollment of Ordinary Universities", which signaled that "the school entrance examination is about to become history". In this document, it is mentioned that in 2020, except for some independently established undergraduate art colleges (including a few universities with reference implementation) approved by the Ministry of Education, other universities will no longer organize school exams for majors covered by provincial unified exams for art and design. In 2021, the Guiding Opinions of the Ministry of Education on Further Strengthening and Improving the Enrollment Work of Art Majors in Ordinary Higher Education Institutions (hereinafter referred to as the "Opinions") were released, which is the first programmatic and guiding policy issued for the college entrance examination of art majors. More importantly, the Opinion clearly states that the "New Art Examination" has a transitional period of three years: starting from 2021, relevant reform work will be promoted, and by 2024, the basic establishment will be based on the unified college entrance examination and the provincial professional examination (hereinafter referred to as the "provincial unified examination") as the main body.
