The first female Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization takes office

The World Meteorological Organization released a statement on the 4th stating that Seleste Sholo from Argentina will serve as the Secretary General of the organization from January 1, 2024, becoming the first female Secretary General of the organization and the first Secretary General from a South American country. Shao Luo has been serving as the Director of the Argentine National Meteorological Agency since 2014 and has previously served as the First Vice President of the World Meteorological Organization. In June 2023, she was appointed as the new Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization at the quadrennial World Meteorological Congress. The communique stated that Shaoluo will guide the World Meteorological Organization in achieving its vision to enable all countries, especially the most vulnerable, to better withstand extreme weather, climate change, and other environmental events. She will also lead the World Meteorological Organization in its efforts to transform scientific achievements into the best service for society. "Climate change is the biggest global threat of our time, and increasingly severe inequality is exacerbating its impact," the communique quoted Shaoluo as saying, "I come from the global south, and I strongly realize that more needs to be done to prioritize the needs of the most vulnerable groups.". Shao Luo stated that one of her priorities is to strengthen the work of the World Meteorological Organization at the regional level and assist countries in enhancing their national meteorological and hydrological services capabilities. She will also strive to maintain close cooperation with other United Nations agencies, the private sector, and others in implementing the United Nations Early Warning Initiative for All.
