IMF President warns that the cost of global economic fragmentation is enormous
2024-01-03
International Monetary Fund (IMF) President Georgieva warns that global economic fragmentation may result in a 7% loss of global gross domestic product (GDP). Georgieva stated in a program broadcasted on CNN on the 2nd that restrictions related to "national security" are increasing, and geopolitical factors are causing global economic division. If economic fragmentation continues, it will ultimately result in a 7% loss of global GDP, roughly equivalent to the combined annual GDP of France and Germany. Georgieva said, "Finding ways to reduce friction and focusing on truly meaningful security issues, rather than arbitrarily dividing the world economy, is beneficial for everyone. Otherwise, the 'cake' of the global economy will be smaller." The International Monetary Fund predicted in a report released in October 2023 that the global economic growth rate will slow down from 3.0% in 2023 to 2.9% in 2024, a 0.1 percentage point decrease from the previous forecast.
