New Era China Research Tour · Great Wall Chapter | The Great Wall: Weaving the Link of Civilization Exchange and Mutual Learning

2023-12-29

Spanning two thousand years and spanning forty thousand miles, the Great Wall has witnessed tremendous changes in history and also witnessed exchanges between Chinese and foreign civilizations. Not long ago, foreign athletes participating in the International Ski Federation Ski and Steel Frame Ski World Cup Yanqing Station climbed the Great Wall of Badaling. The athletes walked along the winding city walls, crossed the beacon towers, overlooking the scenery on the mountains, and felt the magnificent momentum of the Great Wall. Canadian snowboarder Jane Channell said that climbing the Great Wall and experiencing this ancient relic of China is truly a special experience. The Great Wall is the crystallization of the hard work and wisdom of the Chinese nation, the largest linear cultural heritage in the world, and an important symbol of Chinese civilization. As one of the most popular sections of the Great Wall in Beijing and even across the country, the Badaling Great Wall has long become an important window for the world to perceive Chinese civilization. ?? This is an autumn view of the Taipingzhai section of the Huangyaguan Great Wall captured on November 6, 2023 in Jizhou District, Tianjin. "The rich and colorful cultural activities of the Great Wall are attracting more and more Chinese and foreign tourists to climb the Great Wall. They are deeply understanding and exploring the culture of the Great Wall, and experiencing the unique charm of the Great Wall up close." said Fan Xuexin, a research librarian at the Yanqing District Cultural and Tourism Bureau in Beijing. In May of this year, the 2023 China Tianjin Huangyaguan Great Wall International Marathon was held in Jizhou District, Tianjin. More than 1000 marathon enthusiasts from more than 20 countries and regions participated in the competition. Since 1999, the event has been successfully held for 20 sessions and has become an important event of the International Marathon Association. It has been recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations as an international standard mountain marathon route. Participants not only experience the competition, but also fully experience the magnificent ancient city of Jizhou and appreciate the unique cultural charm and folk customs of northern China. Apart from cultural attributes and symbolic significance, many studies have shown that the Great Wall itself also has open and communicative attributes. The team led by Zhang Yukun, an expert in the research of the Great Wall defense system and a professor at the School of Architecture of Tianjin University, identified over 130 hidden door physical relics and constructed their "family map" for the first time by continuously shooting over 90% of the artificial walls along the entire Ming Great Wall with a resolution close to centimeter level, revealing the "secret passage" of the Great Wall to the world. Zhang Yukun said that the hidden door is more of a channel for communication on both sides, which proves that the Great Wall is not completely closed, but rather "open" in an orderly manner. Some cultural relics unearthed in the Great Wall area also showcase the stories of cultural exchange from thousands of years ago to the world. Recently, a bronze artifact displayed at the Inner Mongolia Museum, dating back over 2000 years, has attracted many tourists. On the bronze vessels, the Hu and Han people danced gracefully around the raging campfire, enjoying a harmonious atmosphere. This cultural relic from the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period, named the Bronze Pot with a Ring Ear in the Head of the Dance Man and Animal Pattern Shop, was unearthed in Liangcheng County, Inner Mongolia, along the Great Wall. Inner Mongolia spans 11 historical periods including Qin, Han, Jin, and Ming, with a total length of 7570 kilometers. This Great Wall area is not only an intersection of agricultural and nomadic production methods, but also a special cultural zone where multiple ethnic cultures collide. For thousands of years, a large number of exquisite cultural relics have been left behind in the Great Wall area, like pearls strung together for ethnic exchange and cultural exchange
