Chinese Spallation Neutron Source: A "Super Microscope" for Exploring the Microscopic World
2023-12-29
If the scattering neutron source is a super microscope for exploring the microscopic world of matter, then the spectrometers surrounding the target station are different lenses, meeting the scientific research needs of different disciplines and directions. In 2023, relying on scattered neutron sources, a series of original achievements were produced, providing source momentum for the high-quality development of related industries. The atmospheric neutron spectrometer is a new spectrometer operated by the Spallation Neutron Source this year. It can accelerate the simulation of the neutron irradiation environment generated by cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere. In the past, the failure of many electronic components in the atmosphere and on the ground was related to the irradiation of atmospheric neutrons, especially in the aviation field, where the problem of electronic equipment failure was even more critical. Wang Sheng, Deputy Director of the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chief Commander of the China Spallation Neutron Source Phase II Project, introduced that experiments can be accelerated at a rate of 100 million times at the China Spallation Neutron Source Science Center. Similarly, conducting a one minute measurement experiment at the Spallation Neutron Source Science Center is equivalent to conducting 100 million minutes of measurement under conventional conditions. In 2023, relying on the China Spallation Neutron Source, in the field of new energy vehicles, an uneven phenomenon of carbon lithium compounds during the charging and discharging process of lithium-ion batteries was discovered for the first time through in-situ observation. This overturned the industry's understanding of this and opened up new perspectives for the performance improvement and enhancement of lithium-ion batteries. In the field of engineering, in-situ stress measurement of domestic high-speed rail wheels has been completed, providing complete stress data for high-speed rail wheels for the first time. This provides very important data support for the safety evaluation and correct judgment of the service life of domestic high-speed rail wheels. Since its operation, the scattered neutron source has completed a total of 10 rounds of open operation, with an average annual open hours exceeding 5000 hours and more than 5000 registered users. In 2023, 376 user experiments were completed throughout the year, among which multiple academic papers were published in top academic journals both domestically and internationally, far exceeding the output level of foreign scattered neutron sources at the same stage. In many fields such as aerospace, magnetic quantum materials, new energy, high-performance alloys, and information materials, a number of significant original achievements were produced. In addition, the construction of the second phase of the project will be officially launched, and the number of spectrometers will increase to 20 in the future. The power of accelerators, targets, and target stations will be increased from 100 kW to 500 kW, greatly improving experimental accuracy and speed. At that time, the scattered neutron source will measure smaller samples, study faster dynamic processes, and make more and greater contributions to China's high-level scientific and technological self-reliance!
