2023-12-19

The Chinese government recently issued a decision to accelerate the integration of domestic and foreign trade. Vice Minister of Commerce of China, Sheng Qiuping, stated on the 18th that this move aims to help enterprises walk on two legs and smoothly switch between domestic and international markets according to changes in market conditions. According to the "Several Measures to Accelerate the Development of Integrated Domestic and Foreign Trade" recently issued by the General Office of the State Council of China, domestic trade enterprises will be supported to explore international markets through cross-border e-commerce, market procurement trade, and other means, promote the high-quality implementation of free trade agreements such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), and expand the international development space of enterprises. At the same time, support foreign trade enterprises to expand their domestic market, and support high-quality foreign trade products to enter e-commerce platforms, shopping malls and supermarkets, pedestrian streets in commercial districts, discount stores in factories, and commodity trading markets. At the routine policy briefing held on the same day, Sheng Qiuping stated that Chinese enterprises still face some obstacles when switching between domestic and foreign markets, such as "prioritizing foreign markets over domestic ones", and the ability to integrate domestic and foreign trade operations needs to be improved. He stated that an important goal of integrating domestic and foreign trade is to enhance the development capacity of enterprises in integrating domestic and foreign trade, so that they can smoothly switch between domestic and international markets according to changes in market conditions. In recent years, the scale and quality of China's domestic and foreign trade have further improved. Official data shows that the total retail sales of consumer goods in China in the first 11 months of this year were about 42.8 trillion yuan (RMB), a year-on-year increase of 7.2%; The import and export of goods reached nearly 38 trillion yuan, which remained unchanged year-on-year, firmly ranking as the world's second largest consumer market and the world's largest trading country in goods. In the first 10 months of 2023, the number of integrated domestic and foreign trade enterprises in industrial enterprises above designated size increased by 4.7% year-on-year. (Lai Xin She)
