Inheriting Ethnic Culture through Documentary Images

2023-12-14

At the film exhibition, the audience is exchanging their viewing experiences with the director. What kind of story will happen when farmers pick up their cameras for pictures provided by the National Library of China? How do farmers in Henan tease each other about the talented people in each other's villages during the Spring Festival? How do the Jino people living in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan cut rubber? These answers can be found in the films screened at the 5th China Ethnography Documentary Academic Exhibition. The 5th China Ethnography Documentary Academic Exhibition was held in Beijing recently, capturing the real China through camera footage. The theme of this year's film festival is "One World", and 667 submissions from all over the country have been received, reaching a new high. After being selected by the evaluation committee, 56 shortlisted films were ultimately selected. These films use camera language to explore the customs and traditions of ethnic minorities, record the changes in the lives of different groups under social changes, inspire people to think about artistic and philosophical issues, and record and present the real China to the audience. The film "Asking Rice" exhibited at the opening ceremony presented portraits of China's agricultural society around "who will produce our rice". The film is based on anthropological observation and showcases the changes in production, lifestyle, cultural customs, and other aspects of rural areas in southwestern China over the past decade. Director Wang Jue hopes to objectively and faithfully record these changes. "The way we understand these changes is to ask questions, to ask questions that we cannot respond to ourselves," she said. In the view of freelance designer Hu Yalong, documentaries can help people understand things and phenomena that they do not originally understand. "If it weren't for watching this film, it would be difficult for me to understand the details of grain production," Hu Yalong said after watching "Ask Rice". Intangible cultural heritage carries the memory of the Chinese nation and also engraves the genes of traditional culture. Generations of craftsmen continue the cultural bloodline with the warmth of their hands. This year's film festival has set up a special intangible cultural heritage imaging unit, showcasing 16 films including "Earth Carnival: Henan Lingbao's" Blaming the Society Fire "," Longzhou Nongdong ", and" Different Li Characters ", which showcase the traditional" cursing the society fire "during the Henan Spring Festival. These films record the diversity and brilliance of Chinese intangible cultural heritage. In addition, rural and community life is also one of the themes of this year's film festival. How do children of Alzheimer's patients communicate with them, how do children in the deep mountains receive football training, what is the spiritual world of shepherds? Works such as "Old Children", "Football Dream in the Cloud", and "Wild Mountains" attempt to present answers to these questions, providing audiences with a window to understand the real life of Chinese people. Many of the directors at this film festival have profound academic skills and research value, some of whom are researchers in related disciplines. They seek a balance between academic value and viewing value by incorporating documentary shooting techniques. Wu Xiaoqun, the director of "Carnival on the Earth: Henan Lingbao" Blaming the Society Fire, "is a PhD in Folklore Studies and a postdoctoral fellow in Anthropology. He is currently a professor and doctoral supervisor at the School of Literature, Henan University. "I am a documentary enthusiast myself and have invested a lot of time and effort into this film," said Wu Xiaoqun. Ethnic imagery and ethnic themed documentaries are vivid carriers of the history and culture of the Chinese nation, carrying passionate national emotions
