On December 12th, the first Caravaggio themed exhibition in China, "Caravaggio and Baroque Miracle," opened at the Pudong Art Museum in Shanghai. This exhibition includes 6 original works by Caravaggio and over 50 authentic works by over 40 Baroque artists. The exhibition is jointly organized by the Pudong Art Museum and the Roman Borghese Art Museum, and will continue until April next year. Several Italian national treasures, including "The Boy Holding the Fruit Basket," have also made their debut in domestic art museums. "The Boy Holding a Fruit Basket" is an early work by Caravaggio, showcasing a three-quarters bust of a young man holding a basket filled with autumn leaves and fruits. In this work, light plays a major role: it seeps out from behind the boy, reflecting on the basket, causing the fruits in the basket to present various irregularities and imperfections. According to some scholars, these autumn fruits symbolize fleeting time, aging appearance, and death. On the canvas, Caravaggio demonstrated his ability to study the natural world through profound imitation. The multiple original works of Caravaggio exhibited this time showcase the artist's extraordinary talent in capturing the essence of moments. Through their mastery of light and shadow, as well as their use of light and shadow, they create the ultimate sense of drama and emotional intensity in their works, resonating with the audience. Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, widely known as Caravaggio, is often regarded as the last great master of the Renaissance and the pioneer of Baroque painting, exerting a significant influence on many artists of his time and subsequent eras. Nowadays, his works are collected by many globally renowned art institutions such as the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Winter Palace, and the National Gallery of Fine Arts in the UK. In just 38 years of his life, he left behind only a few surviving works, and the number of works available for lending and exhibition was extremely limited. In addition to 6 authentic works by Caravaggio, this exhibition also showcases over 50 exquisite original works by over 40 other Baroque artists deeply influenced by the Caravaggio style movement. According to the curator, this exhibition is a tribute to various forms of Baroque painting art, showcasing the eternal dialogue between the past and present, as well as between different artistic personalities of that era. The entire space of the exhibition has also been specially designed in conjunction with the unique Baroque style of light and dark, color, and spatial layout concepts, and rich Baroque architectural details and music have been introduced to allow visitors to better immerse themselves.
