A landmark study conducted by scientists from King's College London in the UK has shown that the use of biotherapy can control severe asthma without the need for patients to inhale high-dose steroids like before. The latest research is expected to completely revolutionize the treatment of severe asthma, and related papers have been published in the latest issue of The Lancet magazine. This study was conducted at 22 locations in four countries: the UK, France, Italy, and Germany. The results showed that 92% of patients who used biotherapy were able to safely reduce the dose of inhaled steroids, and over 60% of patients could stop using steroids. Asthma is one of the most common respiratory diseases worldwide, affecting nearly 300 million people, of which about 3% to 5% suffer from severe asthma. This can cause patients to experience daily symptoms of breathing difficulties, chest tightness, and coughing, sometimes even requiring hospitalization. In current therapies, patients need to inhale high-dose steroids. Inhalation of steroids often causes serious side effects, such as osteoporosis, which increases the risk of fractures, diabetes and cataracts. Professor David Jackson, the head of the latest research and professor of respiratory medicine at King's College London, pointed out that biological therapy has completely changed the treatment of severe asthma in many aspects.
