The world's first successful case of a new type of cellular valve "heart nourishing"
2023-12-08
Wuhan, December 7th (Xinhua) - On December 7th, Yue Yue (pseudonym), a 13-year-old child with congenital heart disease who received a new valve material "heart tonifying" at the Affiliated Union Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as "Union Hospital"), returned to Union Hospital for re examination. This is the first successful implementation of a new cellular pulmonary valve replacement surgery in the world. This valve is the world's first new cellular valve independently developed by Professor Dong Nianguo from the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, who has overcome the durability problem of traditional biological valves over a period of more than 20 years. In May this year, Yue Yue was urgently sent to the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Peking Union Medical College Hospital. After examination, it was found that her pulmonary artery valve had severe regurgitation, and there was tumor like dilation in the pulmonary artery. The right ventricle had nearly doubled in size, and her right heart was not functioning properly. Surgical treatment was urgently needed. "The new type of cellular valve has excellent biomechanical properties. After implantation, autologous cells will grow inside the valve material and have the ability to reshape and repair tissues, making it less prone to calcification and decay, which is beneficial for the recovery of pulmonary valve function in children." Dong Nianguo introduced that considering Yue Yue's young age, existing clinical biological valves and mechanical valves are not suitable. After discussion and evaluation, Decided to perform transcatheter new cellular pulmonary valve replacement surgery for the patient. Dong Nianguo used the right ventricular outflow tract as the main puncture point and inserted a new type of cellular pulmonary artery valve resembling a lotus flower into Yue Yue's pulmonary artery through a thin interventional guide wire. After installation, the implanted valve slowly unfolds in the child's body, with no pulmonary valve reflux or perivalvular leakage. The valve replacement process only takes 5 minutes. Re examination of cardiac ultrasound showed that Yue Yue's postoperative recovery was good, the artificial pulmonary valve function was good, the right heart was smaller than before, and the heart function was significantly improved.
