Common misconceptions in traditional Chinese medicine health preservation: Have you been hit?

2023-12-01

Nowadays, with the continuous heating up of the "traditional Chinese medicine fever", internet platforms are filled with a large amount of Chinese medicine health knowledge with uneven content. There are also many "health bloggers" on various social media platforms, which are becoming an important source for young people to obtain Chinese medicine knowledge. A recent survey conducted by the Social Survey Center of China Youth Daily showed that 51.9% of the surveyed youth would choose to learn about traditional Chinese medicine health knowledge through social media platforms, which is the main way for young people to acquire traditional Chinese medicine health knowledge. How to distinguish authenticity in the face of mixed online information? The reporter from China Youth Daily and China Youth Network interviewed Fan Su, Deputy Chief Physician of the Special Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Wangjing Hospital, Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and summarized several common misconceptions in traditional Chinese medicine health preservation based on current hot topics. Reporter from China Youth Daily and China Youth Network: "Removing dampness" is a popular concept among young people nowadays. Is "removing dampness" suitable for everyone? Fan Su: Many young people don't understand what "dampness" is, and sometimes they even blindly remove dampness. "Removing dampness" is not applicable to people of all constitutions. For example, some people with poor spleen and stomach, or those with cold or yin deficiency constitutions, cannot blindly use some dampness removing drugs. I think there is still a big misunderstanding in this regard. Reporter from China Youth Daily and China Youth Network: Some people feel that they are very "empty" and believe that the more they make up, the better. Is this viewpoint correct? Fan Su: Excessive tonifying is also one of the common misconceptions in traditional Chinese medicine health preservation. Many young people think they are very weak, but sometimes this "weakness" is not true weakness, but a lack of exercise, leading to a decline in cardiovascular and pulmonary abilities. But some people may feel that they are already weak and have a weak immune system, so they like to use some supplements, such as ginseng, astragalus, goji berries, etc. However, they may not have gone to the hospital for systematic diagnosis. If they consume too many of these greasy supplements, it may further aggravate the disorder of human metabolism and also cause other problems. Reporter from China Youth Daily and China Youth Network: Is there any basis for traditional Chinese medicine health preservation in the practice of sun drying the back during the dog days? What should I pay attention to when sunbathing my back? Fan Su: There is a certain scientific basis for sun drying the back in traditional Chinese medicine. It improves human metabolism and enhances immunity by stimulating meridians and promoting the generation of yang qi. There are some misconceptions about sun drying one's back: firstly, sun drying one's back regardless of time period. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes sun drying one's back between 9:00 and 10:00 in the morning. However, some young people may sun their back in the afternoon because they are at work or cannot wake up early at this time. However, sun drying one's back in the afternoon is not conducive to the development of yang energy. The second is that sunbathing the back is not "exposure to sunlight", and pursuing exposure to sunlight may pose a risk of sunburn. If young people do not have the conditions to sunbathe their backs, we have a good alternative method, which is to take a hot bath. During the three to nine days and three dog days, which are suitable for stimulating yang energy, we can use water with a slightly higher temperature than the usual bath water temperature, but cannot feel hot. We can use a shower nozzle to directly flush the Dazhui acupoint, Zhiyang acupoint, and Jiaomian acupoint to stimulate the body's yang energy. But it should be noted that sun drying the back is only suitable for constitution with deficiency cold. Some people have a damp and hot constitution, and they themselves are patients with yang hyperactivity. We do not recommend sunbathing their backs too much, as it may lead to upper body temperature
