Guangming Daily reporter Ruan Ziyan, Zhang Yong, and Xu Xinyu are located in Yunnan, on the southwestern border of China. They have rich and diverse resources of traditional Chinese medicine, with over 8800 discovered species, ranking first in the country. They are truly a major province of traditional Chinese medicine. On this magical land, Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine has rooted itself in the fields and sowed the seeds of knowledge, cultivating batches of talents in traditional Chinese medicine, continuing to write legendary stories of traditional Chinese medicine, and promoting the high-quality development of Yunnan's traditional Chinese medicine industry through scientific research. The transformation of small grass fruit into "golden fruit" grass fruit is a pillar industry for various ethnic groups in Nujiang Lisu Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan to increase income and become prosperous, and is known as "golden fruit" and "ruby" by the local people. At the end of 2020, the Nujiang Green Flavor Industry Research Institute and Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine jointly established the first state-level expert workstation in Nujiang Prefecture. Teachers and students from Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine came to the Nujiang Canyon to support the development of the Nujiang grass and fruit industry with scientific research capabilities. "Farmers lack knowledge about plant types, which affects the yield of grass fruits," said Yang Yaowen, a professor at Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Increasing the proportion of grass fruit raised plants can increase the yield of grass fruit. "Local growers refer to raised and drooping plants as' mother plants' and 'male plants', respectively. When we use their words to educate them, our acceptance also increases!" For three years, Yang Yaowen led a team to root in the Nujiang Canyon, listen to the confusion and needs of farmers, and hold special lectures for grass and fruit growers in Nujiang Prefecture and scientific and technological personnel in research institutes to help them better understand the biological characteristics of grass and fruit. In addition to providing practical assistance to local growers to improve the fruiting rate and quality of grass fruit plants, Yang Yaowen and his team also led the completion of the National Natural Science Foundation project "Research on the Construction and Cultivation Origin of Grass Fruit Core Germplasm", hoping to cultivate one or two new varieties in the future. Like the team led by Yang Yaowen, teachers and students from Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine have delved into various traditional Chinese medicine planting areas in Lijiang City and Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, using their professional knowledge to assist in the development of local traditional Chinese medicine. Under the scientific guidance of the team from Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the conversion of scientific research achievements into the "golden key" for people to become prosperous has led to a dual increase in the production and quality of traditional Chinese medicine in the locations where multiple expert workstations are located, achieving effective transformation of scientific research achievements. Beidou Township, Yongping County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province is the location of Ji Pengzhang Workstation, a grassroots scientific research workstation for experts in Yunnan Province. For the past decade, Ji Pengzhang, a teacher at Yunnan University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, has led a project team rooted in Yongping, committed to scientific research and achievement transformation in the cultivation of traditional Chinese medicines such as Dianhuangjing, Dianchonglou, and Tianma. The scientific research project he participated in, "Key Technologies and Applications for Green Production of Sanqi and Dianzhong Tower," won the second prize of Yunnan Province Science and Technology Progress Award in 2021. Nowadays, the cultivation and processing of traditional Chinese medicine has developed into one of the pillar industries in Yongping County, becoming the "golden key" for local people to become rich. "Cultivating leading enterprises in the field of local traditional Chinese medicine is the key to driving farmers' income growth and prosperity," said Ji Pengzhang. For the past decade, expert workstations have provided long-term guidance to local enterprises and farmers in planting traditional Chinese medicinal materials such as Dianhuang Jing, Dianzhong Lou, and Bai Ji. The planting area is over 1000 acres, and more than 100 technical personnel have been trained. The annual economic benefits achieved are over 24 million yuan
