2023-11-24

China News Agency, Hong Kong, November 23 (Reporter Liu Dawei) The Education Bureau of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government announced on the 23rd that it will offer humanities courses in primary schools, and simultaneously announced the "Draft Framework for Humanities Curriculum for Primary School Students". The Education Bureau stated that the setting of primary school humanities courses is based on the current primary school common sense courses, with the vast majority of content derived from existing common sense topics and restructured to enhance teaching elements such as Chinese culture, national history, and national geography. It systematically cultivates students' national concepts, national emotions, and national identity from an early age to implement patriotic education. After restructuring, humanities courses cover six categories, including "Health and Life", "Environment and Life", "Finance and Economy", "Society and Citizenship", "Country and Me", and "World and Me". Among them, the category of "environment and life" aims to arouse students' attention to the environment and sustainable development of life, and to understand the geographical development of the country; The category of "wealth management and economy" aims to help students understand the knowledge of wealth management, enhance their financial abilities, and understand the economic development and relationship between the country and Hong Kong; The category of "society and citizens" aims to inspire students to understand society and pay attention to social affairs, understand the rights and obligations of citizens, and enhance civic awareness. Third grade students also need to learn the origin of the Basic Law of Hong Kong and "One Country, Two Systems", and have a preliminary understanding of Hong Kong's National Security Law; The category of 'country and myself' aims to increase students' interest in national history, Chinese nation and culture, as well as national development, and cultivate a sense of belonging to the country. The establishment of humanities courses in primary schools is a measure proposed by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Li Ka chao, in this year's policy address, and is also a designated project indicator in the policy address. The Education Bureau stated that the relevant subject courses will be piloted starting from the next academic year and will be fully implemented in all grades of primary school in the 2027/2028 academic year.
