The Guangdong Provincial Art Festival, sponsored by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, was founded in 1984 and is held every three years. It is the earliest provincial-level professional art event established in China and also the highest level professional art performance event in the province. This art festival brings together 40 large-scale plays and 44 small-scale stage art works from various parts of Guangdong Province. The large-scale repertoire covers 8 artistic forms, including traditional Chinese opera, drama, dance, opera, musical, acrobatics, puppetry, and symphonic concerts. Among them, the art of traditional Chinese opera includes the three major forms of Cantonese opera, Chaozhou opera, and Han opera, as well as local and rare forms of opera such as Lei opera, Shan opera, tea picking opera, Huachao opera, and Western Qin opera, all of which complement each other. 40 large-scale dramas include newly edited historical dramas and costume dramas based on the long history of Lingnan, dramas with revolutionary history as the content, and modern dramas reflecting contemporary life. Among them, contemporary reality themes account for nearly half, fully demonstrating the enthusiasm and initiative of Guangdong artists to feel the pulse of the times, immerse themselves in the ink of the times, depict the style of the times, and create images of the times under the creative direction of "putting the people at the center".
