Promoting the upgrading of disciplinary paradigms through an international first-class platform
2023-11-01
In order to promote the construction of the paleontological experimental technology platform, and effectively transform the world's cutting-edge scientific research achievements into the development advantages of promoting the upgrading of the discipline paradigm, the Party Committee of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (hereinafter referred to as the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology) has focused on improving the level of the experimental technology platform, striving to create a national key laboratory for vertebrate evolution and human origin, and promoting the upgrading of the discipline paradigm. Through on-site visits to laboratories, entering the frontline of scientific research, conducting in-depth discussions with researchers, jointly planning, and promoting development. Paleontology is an indispensable and important component of basic science. In recent years, the development of this research field has shown characteristics such as interdisciplinary infiltration, exploration and application of high-tech means, and expansion towards micro precision and macro evolution, continuously producing achievements with significant impacts on life sciences, earth sciences, and environmental sciences. According to the new situation and task requirements, research institutions such as the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology have continuously achieved significant results in demonstrating the "human history of China for millions of years", serving the national major needs of the concept of "community with a shared future for mankind" and "community of the Chinese nation", focusing on human origin, vertebrate evolution, and other aspects. In our research, we found that facing increasingly fierce international competition and rapid technological changes, there are still weak links in the basic experimental technology platform of Chinese paleontology. Firstly, the existing quantity and quality of scientific research equipment cannot meet the needs of disciplinary development, and there is an urgent need to add many new types of equipment. The second reason is that some equipment is outdated and aging, and there are shortcomings in competition with world-class similar institutions. Thirdly, there is a shortage of existing funding resources and limited investment. China has abundant fossil resources and a strong research team. To continue to maintain its leading position in this field, advanced equipment and technological means are crucial. Through research, we have proposed measures to improve the level of experimental technology platforms and promote the upgrading of disciplinary paradigms. We have formulated a long-term work plan and actively sought support, striving to establish an international first-class paleontology and archaeology research platform by the end of the 14th Five Year Plan. Firstly, apply new technologies and methods to explore new disciplinary growth points. One is to focus on "high-precision digital imaging and functional morphology research of vertebrate fossils", and explore cutting-edge technologies such as paleohistology micro nano energy spectrum 3D detection based on the widespread application of continuous slicing, high-precision CT, etc., to carry out non-destructive ultra high precision morphology detection; The system integrates massive amounts of data from China and even the world, and builds high-performance data mining and big data computing platforms to provide big data storage, data mining, and visualization platform support for understanding cutting-edge scientific issues such as the origin and evolution of life, biodiversity and ecosystem changes, collaborative evolution of life and environment, as well as fossil and natural heritage protection, geological park construction, and popular science education. The second is to actively promote the establishment of an information-based data platform for ancient human sites, scanning the relics, artifacts, and the site itself unearthed from ancient human Paleolithic sites, conducting topographic and geomorphological mapping of the area where the site is located, preserving information left over by ancient humans as much as possible, and establishing a three-dimensional model of the site and its location, providing accurate and comprehensive analysis data for the protection and scientific research of ancient human sites. Three is entering one
