2023-11-01
On the morning of November 1st, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government jointly held the 40th China Antarctic Expedition at the domestic base dock in Shanghai. The 40th Chinese Antarctic Expedition Team departed from China on November 1, 2023 and returned in April 2024, lasting for over 5 months. For the first time, the investigation mission was supported by three ships. The "Snow Dragon" and "Snow Dragon 2" ships departed from Shanghai, mainly performing scientific investigations, personnel transportation, and logistics supply tasks; The "Tianhui" cargo ship departs from Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu, mainly responsible for transporting materials for the construction of the new scientific research station. The inspection team consists of over 460 people from over 80 domestic units. China's 40th Antarctic Expedition will focus on three tasks: firstly, building new scientific research stations. This station is located in the coastal area of the Ross Sea in Southeast Antarctica, and is China's fifth Antarctic exploration station. It is the third perennial exploration station after the Great Wall and Zhongshan stations, and also the first exploration station facing the Pacific sector. It will carry out multi-sphere and multi-disciplinary observation monitoring and scientific research work on atmospheric environment, marine basic environment, biological ecology, and other aspects. After completion, it is expected to accommodate 80 summer inspectors and 30 winter inspectors. The second is to investigate the impact and feedback of climate change on the Antarctic ecosystem. Relying on the "Snow Dragon" and "Snow Dragon 2" vessels, comprehensive investigations and monitoring of biological ecology, water environment, sedimentary environment, atmospheric environment, and pollutant distribution will be carried out in the Prydz Bay, Astronaut Sea, Ross Sea, Amundsen Sea, and adjacent waters of the Antarctic Peninsula in Southeast Antarctica; Relying on Kunlun Station, Zhongshan Station, and Great Wall Station, we will conduct comprehensive investigations and monitoring of ecosystems, nearshore marine environment, soil environment, geological environment, atmospheric environment, snow and ice environment, and spatial environment, and conduct in-depth research on the role of Antarctica in global climate change. The third is to actively carry out international cooperation. Carry out international research cooperation in the forefront of Antarctic science, carry out aerial surveys of Enderby Land in cooperation with Norway, Australia, and other countries, explore the ice sea bedrock interaction in the critical data gap area of the Antarctic ice sheet, and support precise assessment of ice sheet material balance and instability research. International cooperation in logistics support with countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, South Korea, Russia, Chile, etc. (New News Agency)
