School physical education should lay the foundation for students' healthy and happy lives

2023-10-24

After the reform of physical education in the middle school entrance examination, physical fitness tests for grades 4, 6, and 8 in multiple provinces, regions, and cities have accounted for certain scores and been included in the middle school entrance examination scores, which have entered the agenda. At present, it is the autumn semester, and various parts of the country are carrying out health and physical fitness monitoring activities for primary and secondary school students. Some regions have begun to try to test students' physical performance through process and value-added evaluation methods, increasing the proportion of process test scores in students' daily exams and further education tests. For example, the reform of physical education in Beijing's high school entrance examination has ushered in new changes this year: students in grades four, six, and eight will participate in the physical health testing of primary and secondary schools in a unified manner according to requirements, at different levels, time periods, and content. The overall test result will be used as a process assessment result and included in the overall physical education score of students in the middle school entrance examination. Nationwide, not only in Beijing, but also in other places such as Shanghai, Tianjin, Yunnan, Guangdong, etc., it has become a norm to carry out process based physical fitness monitoring for the sports high school entrance examination. Process based physical fitness monitoring has injected a "booster" into school sports work, increasing the attention of schools, parents, and society to sports, and playing an extremely important guiding role in promoting school sports evaluation, family sports exercise, and creating a sports atmosphere in society. However, during the implementation process, it has also been exposed that schools, parents, and society attach importance to sports only in order to achieve high scores in the middle school entrance examination, which can easily lead to utilitarian, exam oriented, and short-sighted tendencies, deviating from the original intention of sports to "promote learning through exams" and "sports people". The physical examination results will be included in the overall physical education score of the middle school entrance examination, and this "baton" has also triggered the utilitarianism of some people's motivation for physical exercise. Under the influence of the "baton" of the middle school and college entrance exams, schools, parents, and students will "accurately take the exam", "what to take and teach", "what to take and practice", and "what to take and make up". In school physical education teaching, if teachers focus mainly on teaching skills and techniques for the high school entrance examination physical education exam items, students will not receive comprehensive physical exercise. Some parents take their children to participate in physical exercise with the utilitarian goal of "achieving excellence, achieving full marks, and being able to add points" in physical tests. Under the inertia of "as long as there is an exam, there must be training", many off campus training institutions quickly offer various exam oriented crash courses, and provide targeted sports training related to physical testing to meet the psychological needs of some parents to ensure their children receive high and full scores in the short term. This not only does not help students regain the fun of sports, but also does not benefit their physical health, which goes against the goals of school sports. According to the National Student Physical Health Standards, there are five physical fitness testing items for junior high school boys, including: 50 meters, standing long jump, sitting forward bending, pull-up, and 1000 meters. The physical fitness test items for girls include: 50 meters, standing long jump, sitting forward bending, sit ups, and 800 meters. Due to the relatively fixed testing project settings, some students only undergo intensive, mechanical, and repetitive training on the national standard testing projects. Some coaches and parents, fearing that a particular sport of their students will become a "weakness" or "weakness" in the exam and affect their overall physical performance, often adopt a single centralized "devil style" training approach to guide their children to undergo pre exam overload reinforcement training. This can cause great pressure on children's physical and mental health, causing them to feel a sense of avoidance and disgust towards school sports.
