On October 16th, the reporter learned from the China Rice Research Institute that Hunan Jinjian Seed Industry Technology Co., Ltd. has collaborated with the Chinese Rice Research Institute to successfully create a low cadmium mutant LCd1 using chemical mutagenesis, which is the first to cultivate a new early, medium, and late low cadmium rice variety that can be widely promoted and applied in the country. The excessive cadmium content in rice not only affects food security but also affects the healthy development of the rice industry. Breeding new low cadmium rice varieties is the most economical and effective way to fundamentally solve this problem. In 2014, Jinjian Seed Industry teamed up with the China Rice Research Institute to launch a research project on the breeding of low cadmium rice varieties. In 2017, the research team discovered a rice line with a cadmium content that met national standards and was much lower than other individual plants in nearly 100000 rice plants treated with chemical mutagenesis, and named it lcd1. Afterwards, after 9 generations of breeding, the first batch of low cadmium early rice varieties Zhong'anzao 7 and Zhong'an2 were improved and finalized in 2020. After sampling and identification by the Hunan Provincial Grain and Oil Product Quality Monitoring Center, the cadmium content of low cadmium varieties is lower than 0.05 milligrams per kilogram. Afterwards, the research team selected and launched low cadmium medium rice Qingliansizhan and Anyou 2, as well as low cadmium late rice Qingliansimiao and Anliangyou 2, taking the lead in achieving full maturity matching for new low cadmium rice varieties. In 2022, a series of varieties were tested and demonstrated in 34 counties in Hunan Province, covering a total area of 17343 acres of low cadmium rice varieties. According to the experimental report released by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Hunan Province, based on the comprehensive situation of various experimental points, the low cadmium rice new varieties have significant cadmium reduction effects, and the cadmium content in the rice has reached national standards. It is reported that the research team has further expanded the experimental demonstration area to over 40000 acres this year. At present, the research team has jointly launched a new low cadmium rice variety, which is the first in the country to achieve the early, middle, and late full maturity matching of low cadmium accumulation rice varieties.
