The International Olympic Committee has approved the addition of five major events, including cricket and squash, to the Los Angeles Olympics
2023-10-17
On the 16th, the 141st plenary session of the International Olympic Committee passed a proposal to add five major events to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics by a show of hands vote here. Five years later, baseball/softball, cricket, baton, squash, and flag rugby will make their debut at the Los Angeles Olympics. The Los Angeles Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games previously submitted an application to the IOC Olympic Project Committee for the addition of the five major events mentioned above. After discussion and agreement, the Olympic Project Committee submitted the application to the IOC Executive Board. The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee approved the relevant proposals on the 13th and submitted them to the plenary session for final voting. On the 16th, the International Olympic Committee did not vote on whether to agree to add these five projects one by one, but instead "packaged" them for collective voting. As a result, the vast majority of IOC members raised their hands in support, with only two raising their hands in opposition and two abstaining. After the proposal was approved, International Olympic Committee President Bach said, "Choosing these five new events is in line with American sports culture. These events will make the Los Angeles Olympics unique. Their inclusion will connect the Olympic movement with new athletes and fan groups in the United States and even globally, The specific competition plans and number of participating athletes for these five new events need to be determined after consultation between the International Olympic Committee, the Los Angeles Organizing Committee for the Games, and relevant international sports organizations. Baseball/softball, cricket, and baton were previously Olympic events, while squash and flag rugby were first listed as Olympic events. In addition, on the same day of the plenary session, a proposal was also passed to reclassify weightlifting and modern pentathlon as Olympic events. Previously, weightlifting, modern pentathlon, and boxing did not appear on the "preliminary event list" of the Los Angeles Olympics. The International Olympic Committee stated that while modern pentathlon and weightlifting are striving to solve their own problems as required, the plenary agreed to retain these two events at the Los Angeles Olympics, but the future of boxing remains to be determined. Boxing has been an Olympic sport since 1904, but due to issues with governance, refereeing, and finance, the International Olympic Committee suspended its recognition of the International Boxing Federation in 2019. In June of this year, the International Olympic Committee decided to revoke its recognition of the International Boxing Federation. Due to the lack of confirmation of a new international organization for boxing, it is still pending whether boxing can be included in the 2028 Olympics. (New News Agency)
