The International Olympic Committee will determine the venues for both the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics next year

2023-10-16

The 141st plenary session of the International Olympic Committee voted here on the 15th to determine the venues for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics simultaneously next year. The research report on the Winter Olympics shows that with climate change, the number of regions suitable for hosting the Winter Olympics in the world is facing a gradual decrease in the future. To address this challenge, the International Olympic Committee's Committee for the Hosting of the Future Winter Olympics had previously recommended that the venues for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics be determined simultaneously. This proposal was approved by the vast majority of the members of the International Olympic Committee at its plenary session on that day. The Chairman of the International Olympic Committee's Future Winter Olympics Host Committee, Stos, stated that determining the host locations for the next two Winter Olympics is conducive to the "stability" of the Olympic movement, as it not only ensures a reliable Winter Olympics host until 2034, but also allows the International Olympic Committee time to consider the future of the Winter Olympics. Currently, Sweden, Switzerland, and France are interested in bidding for the 2030 Winter Olympics, while Japan's Sapporo, which previously stated its intention to bid, has announced its withdrawal. To avoid a tight connection with the 2028 Summer Olympics, Salt Lake City in the United States is more inclined to bid for the 2034 Winter Olympics. It is understood that the committee of the host city for the future Winter Olympics is conducting a feasibility study for each country that proposes to host it. If everything goes smoothly, the committee will propose candidates to the International Olympic Committee Executive Board next month for further dialogue, and the host city will ultimately be selected at next year's International Olympic Committee plenary session. In 2017, for the first time in the history of the International Olympic Committee, it simultaneously decided to host two consecutive Olympic Games, announcing Paris and Los Angeles as the venues for the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics, respectively.
