In Kenya, the standard gauge railway with a total length of approximately 600 kilometers is currently the largest infrastructure construction project since independence and the flagship project for Kenya to achieve its 2030 national development vision. The railway is constructed by China Road and Bridge Engineering Co., Ltd. and operated and maintained by its subsidiary, Africa Star Railway Operations Co., Ltd. At present, the Kenya Standard Gauge Railway is divided into approximately 480 kilometers of the Mombasa-Nairobi section (i.e. Mombasa-Nairobi Railway) and approximately 120 kilometers of the Nairobi-Sosuwa section (i.e. Phase I of the Nairobi-Malaba Standard Gauge Railway). Tobias, Deputy Manager of Infrastructure Development Department of Kenya Railway Administration, said that as a key project of the cooperation between Kenya and China on the "the Belt and Road", Mombasa Nairobi Railway is an important part of the northern corridor of the East African railway network, which will promote the connectivity of infrastructure in East Africa and drive the common prosperity and development of East African countries. He stated that the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway is like an economic artery, injecting a continuous stream of power into Kenya's social and economic development, and laying a solid foundation for win-win cooperation between Africa and China. South African Ambassador to Kenya, Mningwa Johannes Mahlangu, said that China's high standard construction of the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway not only shortens the time for people to travel between Nairobi and Mombasa, but also improves the efficiency and quantity of goods transportation, driving related economic and industrial development. According to relevant statistics, as of September 30th, the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway has been operating safely for 2314 days, transporting a total of 2.405 million standard containers and sending 28.609 million tons of goods since its opening. A total of 11.155 million passengers were sent, with an average occupancy rate of 95.8%. The highest daily passenger volume exceeded 10000.
