The "Thousand Mile Eye" Protects the Source of the Yellow River
2023-10-08
Zhaling Lake and Eling Lake, known as the "sister lakes" at the source of the Yellow River, are located in Maduo County, Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. Through the remote video monitoring and management system of Qinghai's "Ecological Window", ecological protection workers can conduct real-time monitoring of the source areas of the Yellow River, including Eling Lake, in order to achieve the goal of staying indoors and "seeing thousands of miles". Maduo County, with an average elevation of over 4500 meters, has dense rivers and numerous lakes. It is the core area of the Yellow River Source Park in the Three Rivers Source National Park and an important ecological barrier on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. It is known as the "First County of the Yellow River Source" and "County of Thousand Lakes". Maduo County has an important and special ecological status, but it is difficult to monitor and protect. The "Ecological Window" is a networked remote video real-time observation system built by the Qinghai Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment in 2016 based on the distribution characteristics of key ecological protection areas in the province. Chen Liangbo, a staff member of the Information Center of the Qinghai Provincial Department of Ecology and Environment, introduced that Qinghai's "ecological window" is equivalent to installing a "thousand mile eye", which can overcome the problem of manual monitoring in remote areas such as the source of the Yellow River. In addition to real-time monitoring functions, staff also utilize the massive data accumulated by the "Ecological Window" in Qinghai, relying on the construction of the Yellow River Basin (Qinghai section) ecological supervision information platform, to preliminarily achieve digitalization and informatization of water ecological protection and water environment governance in key Yellow River basins within Qinghai Province, which can display the current status and changing trends of water environment quality in key river basins; At the same time, combined with artificial intelligence automation analysis technology, it can provide information support for comprehensive supervision and scientific decision-making of the water environment in the upper reaches of the Yellow River basin. With the help of technology, the source of the Yellow River is no longer far away: towering snow capped mountains, scattered lakes of all sizes, rare wild animals such as spotted geese and Tibetan wild donkeys occasionally appear... With just a click of the mouse, the beautiful scenery of the source of the Yellow River can be easily seen. Chen Liangbo introduced that after 7 years of construction and development, the number of observation points for the "Ecological Window" in Qinghai has increased from 6 to 76. It can provide real-time high-definition video observations of typical ecological types and natural landscapes, including the Qinghai section of the Yellow River Basin, in a "long-distance, large-scale, and all-round" manner. It is reported that the "Ecological Window" in Qinghai is continuously strengthening data statistics and tracking observations on the number and activity areas of key rare wild animals such as snow leopards and Tibetan antelopes, providing on-site observation and analysis methods for species investigation and biodiversity protection in the source area of the Yellow River. The data shows that the area of the Eling Lake has increased by 117.4 square kilometers compared to 2015, and the water conservation capacity of the source of the Yellow River continues to improve. The number of lakes has increased from 4077 to over 5800. The wild animal population has increased from 79 species in 17 orders, 29 families, to 106 species in 21 orders, 46 families, and the biodiversity is constantly improving. Nowadays, Qinghai's "Ecological Window" is actively exploring automated identification of suspected ecological environment violations and alarm functions, promoting the linkage between digital monitoring and ecological environment supervision and law enforcement, and improving the ecological supervision and law enforcement efficiency in key ecological areas such as the Qinghai section of the Yellow River Basin.
