Meteorological "Guardian" Escorting the Asian Games
2023-09-25
On September 23rd, during the autumnal equinox season, Hangzhou was shrouded in misty rain in the early morning, with a unique charm of Jiangnan. However, Zheng Peiqun, Deputy Director of the Asian Games Meteorological Observatory, had no time to take into account. Her attention was entirely focused on accurately predicting the weather changes that night, providing meteorological support for the successful opening of the Hangzhou Asian Games. During the Asian Games, Hangzhou is in the transition season between summer and autumn, and the weather situation is relatively complex. Zheng Peiqun and team members constantly monitor the meteorological cloud map, analyze the latest monitored meteorological data, and provide a report to the Hangzhou Asian Organizing Committee for decision-making and deployment. On the 21st, Li Yiqing, a spokesperson for the Command Center for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Hangzhou Asian Games, said: "Based on the forecast information provided by the meteorological department at 9:00 am on the 21st, it was cloudy to cloudy with showers on the day of the opening ceremony. We have developed emergency plans for possible extreme weather. Accurate weather forecasting cannot do without the effective support of meteorological equipment. Zheng Peiqun told reporters that a comprehensive three-dimensional meteorological monitoring station network consisting of conventional automatic weather stations, new generation weather radars, X-band weather radars, microwave radiometers, and other components has been established for the Hangzhou Asian Games, focusing on the meteorological support needs of the Asian Games, Asian Paralympic Games events, and urban operations. One of the major difficulties in meteorological support for the Asian Games is to provide precise, quantitative, and timed forecasts for the venue, especially for gusts and precipitation levels, which directly affect the scheduled hosting of the opening ceremony and events, "Zheng Peiqun told reporters. Around the Yafan Center in Xiangshan, Ningbo, a steel fence protects a P-band tropospheric wind profile radar. This radar can stably detect the refined distribution of atmospheric wind fields from the ground to an altitude of 12000 meters, and detect real-time information such as wind direction and speed. Its detection height has doubled compared to the commonly used L-band wind profile radar, providing massive detection data for the competition, "Zheng Peiqun said. In addition to meteorological radar network detection, at the Hangzhou Asian Games site, 23 Aerospace New Meteorological Technology Co., Ltd. of the Second Academy of Aerospace Science and Technology provided over 2000 sets of automatic weather stations. Among them, 10 sets of automatic weather stations, including the Sea Lighthouse Weather Station, Sea Temperature Buoy Weather Station, and Sand Temperature Weather Station, are specially designed for the Asian Games to accurately "check" the weather and ensure the progress of the event. In order to ensure the opening of the Hangzhou Asian Games and the successful hosting of the events, forecasters from the Asian Games Meteorological Observatory conducted daily analysis of the weather situation during the past 20 years of the "Asian Games period", summarized the patterns of weather changes, formed various weather forecasting models during the Asian Games, condensed forecasting experience, and made more precise and precise Asian Games weather forecasts based on numerical forecasting and its applicable products through collective consultation and judgment of forecasting experts.
