Asteroid Bernoulli rock samples will be sent back to Earth
2023-09-21
According to foreign media reports on the 19th, a rock sample of an asteroid named "Bennu" will be brought back to Earth and analyzed on the 24th. It is expected to carry 250 grams of rock material collected in 2020. Scientists from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have predicted that Bernoulli may collide with Earth on September 24, 2182, with a potential impact equivalent to the explosive energy of 22 atomic bombs. This asteroid was discovered in 1999 with a diameter of approximately 492 meters and passes by Earth every 6 years. Although it does not pose a direct threat, its orbit intersects with Earth, making it classified as a potentially dangerous asteroid. For the past 7 years, NASA has been developing a plan to move or destroy Bernu. On September 8, 2016, NASA launched the probe OSIRIS-REx. In 2020, OSIRIS-REx landed on the surface of Bernu and collected rock materials from a sample site called "Nightingale". Understanding the characteristics and trajectories of near Earth asteroids like Bernu is crucial for studying planetary defense. In addition, NASA's deputy director of scientific missions, Nicolas Fox, stated that "the original material from the asteroid Bernoulli can help reveal the formation of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago, and may even reveal the origin of life on Earth." At the same time, the OSIRIS-REx data provides scientists with more accurate information, allowing them to calculate Bernoulli's future trajectory. The most likely date for an impact (estimated to be the closest orbit) is September 24, 2182, and according to NASA data, the probability of an impact on this day is one in 2700, or about 0.037%. By 2300, the probability of an impact with Earth is approximately 1750 times. If Bernu collides with Earth, it will release 1200 megatons of energy. However, it is much smaller than the asteroid that destroyed dinosaurs. (New News Agency)
