The "Sino German Encounter" Calligraphy Exhibition Opened in Berlin

2023-09-15

The "Sino German Encounter" calligraphy exhibition opened on the 13th at the Confucius Institute at the Free University of Berlin. This exhibition uses pen and ink to bring the thoughts of five famous German thinkers to life. The works in this exhibition were specially created by Professor Chen Hongjie from the School of Education at Peking University, taking the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Germany as an opportunity. The work reproduces the main ideas of five famous German thinkers, including Kant, Goethe, Humboldt, Nietzsche, and Weber, through calligraphy, a traditional Chinese art form, symbolizing a beautiful encounter between Chinese and German cultures. Professor Chen Hongjie has long been engaged in the study of German education and intellectual history, and is familiar with the works of these five thinkers. He was also skilled in calligraphy, which inspired him to express German ideas through calligraphy. Kant discusses "beauty" and "wine", "Goethe discusses Chinese literature", and Humboldt discusses "freedom and loneliness" at universities - he selects the essence of these thinkers and provides a simple and humorous personal interpretation. Chen Hongjie admitted that it is difficult for Germans to understand Chinese calligraphy, but they are familiar with Kant, Goethe, and Nietzsche. Using these thinkers as a medium has brought Germans closer to Chinese calligraphy and increased their interest in understanding Chinese calligraphy. According to Professor Gu Anda of the Department of Sinology at the Free University of Berlin, the exhibition is a unique way to promote cultural exchange between Germany and China. He selected works such as "virtue" and "beauty" to explain the formation and evolution of Chinese characters to the on-site audience. In addition, he also had discussions with Chen Hongjie on topics such as the creation of oracle bone calligraphy and the evolution of Chinese character calligraphy. Finally, two experts introduced and interpreted the exhibition works one by one. The on-site audience was full of interest and had a warm interaction with experts. It is reported that the exhibition will continue until October 19th. Previously, many of Chen Hongjie's calligraphy works have been exhibited in various parts of China, as well as in countries such as Germany, Austria, Italy, Japan, and Canada. (New News Agency)
