The latest strategic bomber of the Russian army has made new progress

2023-09-14

According to a report on the website of the Russian newspaper Novosti on September 10th, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu stated in a conference call with Russian military leaders that the Russian military will receive four Tu-160M supersonic strategic bombers this year - upgraded versions of the "White Swan". What global deterrence missions can and will these aircraft perform? The News will introduce you. In 2018, United Aircraft Manufacturing Company signed a contract with the Ministry of Defense to build 10 new Tu-160M supersonic bombers for the Russian Aerospace Forces' long-range aviation force by 2027. The Tu-160M is an upgraded version of the Tu-160 supersonic strategic bomber, which completed its first flight in 1981. The variable sweep wing of Figure 160M provides high aerodynamic efficiency during takeoff and landing, enabling the aircraft to throw ammunition at targets at supersonic speeds. It can use long-range conventional cruise missiles such as Kh-555 and Kh-101, as well as Kh-102 nuclear missiles to strike targets. In the future, this type of aircraft will also become a carrier for new hypersonic air based missiles. The production plan for Figure 160M aims to update and supplement the long-range aircraft fleet, filling the shortage of strategic aircraft before the completion of construction and mass production of the new generation strategic bomber PAK-DA ("Long Range Aviation Future Aviation System", codenamed "Product 80"). The prototype of Figure 160M completed its first flight in January 2018. The first mass-produced machine completed its first flight in January 2022, and the second mass-produced machine was delivered for test flight in December 2022. This summer, the first Tu-160M began national joint testing, and the second may have started factory flight testing in the first half of this year. It will then undergo national testing and prepare for delivery to the Russian Aerospace Forces. It seems that the two aircraft produced from 2020 to 2022 will be handed over to the long-range aviation force by the end of 2023. Figure 160M tested and upgraded the structural components of the fuselage, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and the new NK-32-02 engine. The new Tu-160M is the world's fastest heavy bomber, with a top speed of 2230 kilometers per hour, setting a record for this type of aircraft. The second record in Figure 160M is the payload mass - up to 45 tons of ammunition, with two bomb compartments capable of carrying 12 Kh-101 cruise missiles. The maximum range of an aircraft with ammunition is approximately 10000 kilometers. It is equipped with an aerial refueling system that can complete non landing intercontinental flights and strike enemies anywhere in the world. The fact that the Tu-160 aircraft fleet has expanded to over 20 indicates that the Russian military will form a new Tu-160 aviation regiment. The base of the second Tu-160 aviation group is likely to be in the Far East region. This helps to control the Pacific and West Coast of North America - not temporary duty, but long-term monitoring. The long-term existence of the Tu-160 aircraft fleet and its deployment to the east will enhance the stability of the Russian strategic Trinity Air Force, and its main force for the next 20 years will be the Tu-160M aircraft.
