New Ideas Leading a New Journey: A Chinese Answer to the Harmonious Coexistence of Man and Nature
2023-09-07
Currently, China is actively implementing major biodiversity conservation projects, effectively protecting a large number of rare and endangered species, and slowly unfolding an ecological picture of harmonious coexistence of all things. This is an image of the activities of rare wild animals captured in more than 9000 natural reserves in China. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, over 300 endangered species of wild animals and plants in China have achieved restorative growth and continuously improved their habitat and breeding environment. Among them, giant panda conservation is a successful example of global endangered species conservation. At the Dujiangyan Irrigation Project Base of China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center, staff are taking care of the aging giant pandas "Baiyun" and "Ximeng". With the improvement of breeding management and disease prevention and control technology, the average lifespan of giant pandas continues to extend, and the level of threat has been reduced from "endangered" to "vulnerable". The giant pandas "Haohao" and "Xinghui", as "ambassadors of friendship" in China, are thriving at the Paradise Zoo in Belgium. In current China, there are far more than just giant pandas that are at risk of extinction, and high-level conservation methods are helping to protect endangered wildlife. The scene of a group of wild sika deer leisurely strolling along a small stream with their young was recently captured by an infrared camera in the Taohongling Sika Deer National Nature Reserve in Jiangxi Province. In the past decade, from 365 sika deer to 624 sika deer today, the Taohongling sika deer national nature reserve has become the largest concentrated distribution area for the South China subspecies of sika deer in China, and this species has also escaped the risk of extinction. The expansion of the population benefits from comprehensive protection measures and refined management. At each mountaintop of the protected area, there are more than 10 channels with a total length of 12 kilometers and low vegetation that directly reach the foot of the mountain. This is a "animal passage" specially opened by the protected area for the care of sika deer, which is convenient for sika deer to go down the mountain for drinking water, foraging, and transferring between their habitats. In addition, the latest technological means have also been used for the protection of sika deer. The reserve is developing an artificial intelligence recognition system based on massive monitoring data to perform "deer face recognition" on sika deer, establish an individual database, and conduct more systematic research on the habits of wild sika deer. Nowadays, China is actively building a high-quality protection system for rare and endangered wild animals and plants. The completed National Park Spatial Layout Plan has laid out 49 candidate areas for national parks, accounting for 10.3% of the land area. More than 80% of the national key protected wild animal and plant species and habitats will be protected. (New News Agency)
