Can Eating Iodized Salt Prevent Nuclear Radiation?

2023-09-05

With the fermentation of Japan's nuclear contaminated water discharge incident, people are paying more attention to the prevention of nuclear radiation. Recently, it has been rumored on the internet that "the accumulation of radioactive iodine in the thyroid can be prevented by consuming iodized salt, in order to achieve the goal of protecting the thyroid" - is this really reliable? The idea of preventing nuclear radiation by consuming iodized salt is not advisable. The purpose of salt iodization in China is to prevent and treat iodine deficiency disorders. Environmental iodine deficient areas can safely, conveniently, and long-term supplement iodine nutrition to the entire population through salt iodization, avoiding the impact of iodine deficiency disease on residents' health. According to China's National Food Safety Standard for Iodine Content in Edible Salt, the iodine content in iodized salt is 20mg-30mg per kilogram. In a nuclear pollution accident, when the human body ingests radioactive iodine, it mainly accumulates in the thyroid gland. In the initial stage of thyroid protection, it requires a one-time intake of 100mg of "stable iodine", which is equivalent to a one-time intake of 3kg-5kg of iodized salt. The "Dietary Guidelines for Chinese Residents (2022)" clearly states that "adults should not consume more than 5g of salt per day". If consumed excessively, it can cause serious burden on various organs of the human body, induce or worsen cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, as well as chronic kidney disease. In severe cases, it may cause dehydration or even death. Therefore, it is not advisable to prevent nuclear radiation by consuming iodized salt! (New News Agency)
