Hakka walled houses, a characteristic Chinese residential building, have protected Hakka ancestors for hundreds of years in peace and contentment. Longnan City, located in Ganzhou City, Jiangxi Province, is named as the "Hometown of Chinese Surrounded Houses" by the Chinese Folk Literature and Art Association, with 376 Hakka enclosed houses preserved. As time passes, the ancient walled houses face the risk of collapse or even disappearance. The Longnan City system implements the action of protecting and repairing surrounding houses, and promotes the activation and utilization of these houses, making them shine with new brilliance. In the evening of implementing rescue measures to protect and repair the surrounding houses, we walked into Xiaxingwei, Dongcun Village, Nanheng Township, Longnan City. The afterglow poured down on piles of mottled old walls, and the floor in front of the surrounding houses was covered in golden rice and corn. However, the ancient surrounding houses are still an important material carrier of Hakka culture, and an important place for worshipping ancestors and uniting relatives. During holidays, descendants of the Chen family will hold ancestor worship and celebrations at the Xiaxingwei Ancestral Hall. What we are seeing now is the appearance of Xiaxingwei after the government implemented a subsidy policy last year and carried out overall repairs to the exterior of the surrounding houses. Previously, the family donated tens of thousands of yuan per year, which was only enough to repair the ancestral hall and could not take into account the other parts of the surrounding houses, "Chen Jiandong said. Pan Ping, director of the Hakka Culture Research Center in Longnan City, loves Hakka culture, and the center is also the main leading unit for the protection, repair, and revitalization of the surrounding houses in Longnan. In 2018, Pan Ping began conducting field investigations on the surrounding houses in Longnan. He woke up before 6 am and visited several surrounding houses before going to work. Over the course of three years, he visited all the surrounding houses in Longnan and systematically collected and organized information such as their names, addresses, construction years, property rights, and degree of damage. More than half of the surrounding houses are partially or severely damaged, with some only remaining ruins and only surrounding names.
