Experts explain how to cope with bone "cliff like" aging
2023-08-24
It has always been common for elderly people to experience fractures due to accidental falls. For elderly people, falling is a major event. Many people reach a certain age, and their bones will enter a "cliff like" aging process. Some small bumps may cause fractures or bone fractures. So, why do bones age? How to judge bone aging? How to carry out bone maintenance? With these questions in mind, a reporter from Science and Technology Daily interviewed Professor Fan Xiaohong, Vice Chairman of the Bone Injury Rehabilitation Professional Committee of the China Rehabilitation Medical Association and Vice President of the Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Osteoporosis is a landmark manifestation of the continuous and constantly changing process of human growth, development, and aging, and the internal quality of bones is also changing anytime and anywhere. The bones of the human body are constantly self renewing throughout the entire process of life, never stopping for a moment. The renewal of bones includes two processes: bone resorption and bone formation, the former being the enhancement of osteoclast activity and the destruction of old bones; The latter enhances the activity of osteoblasts and promotes new bone formation. At a certain age, the speed of bone absorption is greater than the speed of bone formation, and bone mass begins to decrease, leading to a decrease in bone matrix and gradual aging of bones. At the same time, bone strength not only depends on the intrinsic material content, but also on the internal structure of the bone. Fan Xiaohong explained, "Bone trabeculae are the microstructure inside bones, a dense network structure in the bone marrow cavity that supports bones and carries loads, and is one of the main factors affecting bone strength. The density of bone trabeculae determines the degree of osteoporosis." The landmark manifestation of bone aging is osteoporosis. Fan Xiaohong said that osteoporosis makes bones increasingly brittle, and once people with osteoporosis collide, it can easily lead to fractures. The most common site for osteoporotic fractures is the spine. Fan Xiaohong explained that as age increases, many elderly people's vertebral bodies gradually become flattened from round, and the trabeculae of the spine become very sparse, unable to support certain intensity of movement, which can easily lead to vertebral compression fractures. In addition, common elderly skeletal diseases include fractures of the distal radius, also known as Clay's fractures, which occur in the wrist after a gentle fall in the elderly. Fan Xiaohong told reporters that in terms of the physiological aging mechanism of humans, the bone aging time of women and men is different. The aging of female bones occurs earlier, mostly during the menopause, around the age of 50. Menopausal women may experience a decline in estrogen, loss of estrogen protection, increased bone resorption activity, and abnormal decalcification of bone, leading to bone loss, leading to significant osteoporosis. Men, on the other hand, typically experience gradual bone aging between the ages of 55 and 60. The situation of bone aging varies among different occupational groups, such as athletes and manual workers, who exercise more during their youth and have relatively high bone strength, resulting in slower bone aging. Fan Xiaohong added, "The bone trabecular structure of athletes is relatively dense, while mental workers exercise relatively less. The density of bone trabeculae is relatively low, and bone calcium is more easily lost, making bones more prone to aging." "Pain is an important signal for discovering the aging of the body's bones." Fan Xiaohong emphasized, "When a person reaches a certain age
