A master of science who has been with small fish and shrimp for 65 years

Liu Ruiyu, a figure provided by the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mei Yiqi said, "The so-called university is not a building, but a master." Liu Ruiyu, a late marine biologist, the founder of Chinese marine benthos ecology and pioneer of crustacean zoology, and a member of the CAS Member, is a "master" in the field of marine biology. In the field of marine science, the academic pure land opened up by Liu Ruiyu is constantly being cultivated, and everyone praises the scientific spirit left behind by Liu Ruiyu. This year is Liu Ruiyu's 101st birthday. He is like an indelible lighthouse and a spiritual beacon, rooted in the hearts of every marine scientist. Catching the tide all her life, she devoted herself to pushing away Liu Ruiyu's former office, Room 417, Marine Biological Specimen Museum of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The ground, tables, chairs, and the sofa near the wall of the office were all piled with books. Liu Ruiyu once sat down here to write, type on the keyboard, and completed over 200 papers and 21 monographs. In 1950, the Chinese Academy of Sciences decided to establish the Qingdao Marine Biology Research Office. Young Liu Ruiyu responded to the call and set foot on the hot spot of marine scientific research. In 1952, under the advocacy and suggestion of Chinese biologist Professor Tong Dizhou, Liu Ruiyu and developmental biologist Wu Shangqin began the study of the life history and artificial breeding of Chinese shrimp, which was the first to clarify the oviposition habits and life history of Chinese shrimp. This study has promoted the development of artificial breeding and aquaculture of Chinese shrimp, as well as the agriculture and animal husbandry. Under the guidance of Liu Ruiyu, in 1981, China achieved the mass production of industrialized shrimp breeding, which led to the second wave of seawater aquaculture in China centered around shrimp farming. It set three world firsts in shrimp farming production, export volume, and breeding volume in China. This achievement won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2008. While Liu Ruiyu is conducting research in the field of shrimp, China's first marine scientific research vessel, the "Venus", is in service, but lacks professional benthic research talents. According to national needs, Liu Ruiyu has presided over and participated in marine scientific surveys multiple times. As a pioneer in the taxonomy of marine organisms in China, Liu Ruiyu comprehensively understood the species composition, geographical distribution, and faunal characteristics of shrimp, crustaceans, crustaceans, and stomatopods in the coastal waters of China. He discovered over 40 new species and 3 new genera, filling the research gap in crustaceans and crustaceans in China. The assessment and protection of marine biodiversity and endangered species have been a part of Liu Ruiyu's scientific research career. In addition to being responsible for compiling the marine invertebrate section of the Red List of Chinese Species, he also provided "household registration" and compiled "biographies" for marine organisms, and collaborated with national experts to compile the "List of Chinese Marine Organisms", which records the names and distribution of all 46 phyla, 22629 species of marine organisms, truly reflecting the diversity status of marine organisms in China and understanding the wealth of marine biological resources in China. As far as the Bohai Sea in the north and Hainan Island in the south, Liu Ruiyu's research footprints are scattered along the coast of the Chinese Sea, and his works are known as "milestone works" in biodiversity research. From crustaceans and benthic organisms to coastal and marine resource surveys, to biodiversity and its protection, Liu Ruiyu's every exploration in the field of science is for the needs of the country and the well-being of the people, in every field
